It’s so bad. But really it’s also the most honest police motto I’ve ever heard.

What’s that American flag sticker on the filing cabinet on the right in the photo? It looks like the Betsy Ross flag, but with the number 2 inside the circle of stars.

Poking around on Google Images I could only find examples with "76", not "200", so unsure.

Ah Jasiel Correa. A total narcissist who had serious charm, and pretty good communication. He was a prince of the Portuguese diaspora who whispered sweet nothings to his constituents. The people saw that pretty face and silken voice and totally ignored that he was barely out of college. They saw visions of a Portuguese Kennedy. Buddy Cianci was shaking his head from heaven. "Can't have a paper trail kid." Good times. (I grew up in nearby Tiverton)

I went down the rabbit hole a few years ago, it’s actually pretty interesting.

The motto was born of one of Fall River’s many great fires — this one, in 1843. The city’s residents resolved to rebuild from the ruins, and their efforts spawned the hopeful “We’ll Try.” It stuck, and for years has adorned both police cruisers and the city seal.

Easy-Progress8252 t1_it7hr2y wrote

That’s the motto for the whole city, not just the PD. I knew people who worked for the city over the years and when I’d point it out to them they’d shrug and agree it’s ridiculous. Probably a facet of the changing times. Maybe in the 1800s it was equivalent to “We’ll take on any challenge” or something similar.

The name "canola" was created from "Canada" and "oil, low acid" because putting bottles labeled "rape oil" on supermarket shelves seeemed like a bad idea.

Additional fun fact, rape is a brassica, putting it in the same genus as Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and broccoli--but all of those are actually the same species, Brassica oleracea, just different cultivars!

Ware MA is "the town that can't be licked!"

"The Great Depression era nearly signaled the demise of the mills. But, the citizens of Ware banded together to buy shares in the struggling companies. The purchase was the first employee buy-out of a major manufacturer in America. Ware Industries was born, preserving the livelihood for hundreds of families. Ware's then-Chief of Police Bartholomew Buckley coined a new phrase for Ware, calling it “The Town that can’t be licked!” Life Magazine heralded the event in their May 23, 1938 issue with an article entitled Life Goes to a Party: Ware, Mass. Celebrates Comeback."

needless to say, things have... changed

Legend has it that residents had originally voted for 'Oh Well, Fuck It! to be the city's motto, but due to some shenanigans at the voting booths, 'We'll Try' mysteriously won.

Still a lot of bitterness and resentment to this day over that one.
