Hi this is going to sound silly but what counts as a household for Mass Save. Like we all live together but we don’t pool our money together. And I really need to upgrade the house with all the incentives Mass Save is giving out and save some more money TIA

Household income is based on the earner, or the earner and a spouse. Other people that live there are not counted as far as I have seen as how would they be?

See this is the difficult part for my brain to comprehend. We all earn and live in the house but we don’t pool money together for expenses. Which theoretically is a household when you pool together for expenses. But it’s also a single family house and not multi unit. 🥴 but I’m also the homeowner so I wonder if it would be based off of me only?

They have a chart with the number of residents in the property and the income thresholds re: benefit qualification. It might be worth a call to the service to understand how the nuances of your situation would work.

The tax definition of a household is the taxpayer(s) and any individuals who are claimed as dependents on one federal income tax return. A tax household may include a spouse and/or dependents.

they go by the taxes filed… so like for my family of 5 there were 2 incomes and 3 dependents taken into account. If you don’t file as Head of Household then it will just go by your tax status.

Not to be a jerk but you should be on masssave.com and not reddit. They have a link specifically for finding out about income thresholds and can answer any other questions you have

Just call them and book an appointment, I booked last month and the closest time was in January.

A household requires a familial (or otherwise legalized) relationship -- your legal spouse, children/guardians, an elderly parent or in-law living with you, etc. You are living with roommates and none of you have a legal or financial obligation to each other. You can't claim each other as dependents.

If you are not related, not married, and not in an otherwise legal relationship (child/guardian), then you all cannot claim to be in a singular household for tax & benefits purposes.

I mean, this is/was literally a huge reason why gay marriage is/was such a contested political issue. Gay couples couldn't get legally married at one point so they were not eligible for any familial/spousal benefits. As you can see, that's a very big deal just in terms of financials.

Get an assessment done by MassSave directly, not an installer, they have one company contracted in different areas that all they do is the assessments and incentives, they are not installation contractors, so they aren't trying to sell you anything - they will match you with an installer after the assessment if you would like. (In my area that's ClearResult.) Several of the contractors also do assessments, but their focus is more on selling you the work they do than determining all the incentives you qualify for. I had one of the largest contractors do my assessment and they didn't care to answer my questions about MassSave programs that wasn't their main line of install work.

Go through the qualification process and when you get to Household Income you’ll see the help button gives a definition.

Also not all parts of the program have an income requirement. Call and make an appt like others said.
