Hi. I was just wondering if you use all your paid sick leave days of 40h but you have a condition that needs you to rest and so not work for more days to weeks, what do you do? Do you have insurance that covers it like work insurance/health insurance? Thanks for sharing.

I have short term disability insurance. Was out a month last year with RSV. Helped a lot.

Check short term disability (probably through your job) and PFML (state program)

Massachusetts provides up to 20 weeks of paid medical leave as long as you have a serious health condition, which is defined as "a physical or mental condition that prevents you from doing your job for more than 3 consecutive days." It requires at least one of the following:

  • Overnight stay in a medical facility
  • 2 or more treatments by a health care provider within 30 days of whatever prevented you from doing your job
  • At least 1 treatment by a health care provider within 30 days of whatever prevented you from doing your job, with plans for continued treatment, including prescriptions

All of this is not taking into account additional benefits that may be provided like short/long term disability.

For long term or chronic conditions, start off by making sure you complete FMLA paperwork for your employer. Assuming they have enough employees, FMLA will allow you to go on paid or unpaid leave without being penalized.

There are disability insurances, as others have mentioned, but I am uncertain if that's an option for a pre-existing condition.

The first 2 weeks come off your normal pro then short term kicks in at 3/4 pay… after that’s exhausted then king term at around half pay.. I know from experience

Ask your employer about FMLA. Depending on your health issue, you may be covered under ADA and your company can make accomodations. Check out AskJan for examples of accomodations that companies can make. You'd be surprised!

I own my buisness.... there are no sick days. But if I do manage to get time off, & I happen to feel really shitty, I will most likely sleep.
