Don't know if it's just me, but it feels like every day I see at least three cars on the highway/streets with only one of their headlights on, and I typically drive every day of the week. Haven't noticed if it's specifically left or right but it feels random. What's up with that? And yes, I really do mean every single day. Started noticing it like a month ago.
Ah, but there's the kicker, I work the night shift so I'm typically out at night regardless, though there is merit in thinking that the bulbs are burning out faster because of the longer nights.

Everyone is being squeezed financially so it’s harder to fix something if it breaks on your car.
A lightbulb is like 3 dollars
To change a HID bulb in my car it costs $100 for the bulb and I need to take half the car apart in order to get to it
Happened to me once, cost $300 for one headlight on a Chevy Malibu, traded it in for a Subaru that I can access myself.
Headlight bulbs are like $20 and up for the most part
And for some people mean a trip to a mechanic, who seldom works for free. And takes time.
Who the fuck goes to the mechanic to fix a headlight?
No offense but I'd love to see an actual headlight halogen that is $3 for anything that's new enough to still run emissions.

I have a 2003 car and had a headlight that burned out. Getting the car inspected and they offered to replace it. Was like 3 dollars with a little bit of labor. Was chatting with the mechanic and he said that the newer cars have these proprietary Light bulbs that are ridiculously expensive like over 20x more expensive. Sounds like expensive consumer-hostile bullshit to me! Hope my car lasts for another 150k miles.
See I have never driven anything newer than an 08 so I wasn’t wrong about the roughly 3 dollar cost. I literally didn’t know new car bulbs were so expensive

In my usual driving, it takes a few days before I notice I’ve got a light out, unless I happen to go somewhere particularly dark.
Also, look at the bulb life. The second-level bulbs have a lifetime of about 160 hours. The third-level drop down to 140.
The regular old cheapest basic bulbs? I’ve seen up to 1,000 hours.
So the cheap option lasts MUCH longer, but people buy the fancier bulbs for their “better” performance. (I found they were a bit brighter, but not much. The pair burned out within 3 days of each other - after 3 months of use.)
I figured this much, but it's weird that I'm seeing it happen so much more lately, so maybe it's just a matter of... lots of people had their last set of bulbs changed at the same time??
Could be. Also, it just got sustainably cold, and changing a lightbulb in the cold is just awful. It’s easy enough for me to do, but squeezing my hand in there without dropping the bulb, OR getting it grimy, can be a challenge.
Does having a fog light out get me access to the club? I got some LED replacements, but I haven’t installed them yet.

Considering how freakishly bright headlights have become, I wouldn’t be surprised.
the temperature drop and the fact that you’re driving in the dark more… the temperature dropping kills lights pretty quickly if they are on the margin though.
Modern car lighting is good enough that one headlight is good enough…to fool folks into believing both are working.
People who can't tell if a headlight is out? If you can't tell if a headlight is out, you really aren't paying attention. Also, if they can't tell, then why are they driving into oncoming traffic with their high beams on?
Some people can't afford a replacement headlight bulb. No friends, some people can't afford cars. Vehicle maintenance is required to own a vehicle.
Lack of enforcement. There used to be a time where people would be pulled over for equipment issues, crossing the "fog line" on the right, running yellow lights or rolling through stop signs. Not anymore.

That would be the fault of Daytime Running Lamps. Makes people forget their lights aren't on properly.

I agree, especially when it's implemented this way. I'm starting to see some vehicles again that use amber lights instead.
If I have a headlight out, I don't often know until I go get my oil changed and the tech points it out to me.
I’m blaming whoever invented “daytime running lights” because my lights are always “on” and I guess just extra “on” at night. But that means the bulb burns out faster, and also I literally can’t tell if one is out for weeks.
Guarantee an out of proportion number will be VW/ Audi. Just an observation over the years

OP, I thought i was the only one who noticed this lately! Seems like nobody here understood the message that, despite you driving at the same time and changing nothing on your behalf, there’s an unusual amount of headlights out. I too, see about 3-4 a day. Weird.

To some small extent, people are squeezed tighter for cash and headlight bulbs are more expensive than they used to be not just due to inflation but design.
Also most people probably don't notice for a few days. Even if they do they may forget or not be able to run out the next day to get one since when you are most likely to notice it's late and stores are closed or closing.
Also, seeing like 3 people in a day if you drive any appreciable distance is probably like a fraction of one percent. It doesn't take a long time to see a hundred cars on the road. If you're commuting on decently trafficked roads you could see a few hundred daily, and you only remember the ones that stand out.
Combine all that with the fact that we're almost at the point where it's darker for the most of the day and it makes sense that you'd see a few every day. I know I do.
