Wow interesting. For example, the Knee Replacement (Total Knee Replacement) surgery at Lowell general hospital is listed as $1,794 which seems super low. Then at St Elizabeth's its $42,000. Is it possible that different hospitals are including different services and medical devices under the same procedure? I can't imagine compensating a surgeon, anesthetist, etc for $1794 not to mention the cost of the knee replacement part.

I had similar observations. Plus, the insurance coverage isn't adequately specific. For example, just putting in BCBS... is that the PPO? I have a BCBS high deductible health plan and the numbers here just don't make sense.

Wouldn't these be the prices without insurance coverage? That is the problem with insurance! Every single one negotiates services at different rates even for services performed at the same hospital.

not necessarily. With my HDHP, the insurance still has a negotiated rate. It's just a negotiated rate that I have to pay instead of the insurance company paying it. For example, I had emergency surgery that was billed to me for $15K. I added my insurance and the bill was revised to $7K for it. I then negotiated it down from there. The website says that BCBS for this surgery is $12 at the hospital I went to. Not $12K. $12. Definitely wrong.

IME this is the rub, especially when it comes to insurance coverage. You can jump through all sorts of hoops to ensure that "the procedure" is covered by your insurance, but then magically the anesthesiologist isn't. At all. And is $25,000 or something ludicrous.

Couple years ago my wife and I held up a fully staffed OR because literally 5 minutes before going in for surgery they put a form in front of us, basically a release, saying that certain aspects *may* not be covered by insurance (including anesthesia/anesthesiologist - they actually called that out), and that we were personally accepting/guaranteeing responsibility for same. This was despite having spent weeks chasing down people at the hospital and our insurance company saying that everything was covered.

So we just refused to sign despite them pressuring us. Magically, 20 minutes later we were cleared for surgery without having to sign the fucking form. Fuck that. Fuck them.

So I wanted to see how this worked and I did an MRI in my hometown with my insurance and it gave me something in the 4200 range. When I scrolled to the bottom and there are other hospitals listed, there was one two towns over that listed it for $3. What's up with that?

I click search and nothing happens. Sometimes the prohibition symbol appears (🚫) but after you've filled in something it no longer appears when you hover over the search button. Even after it's gone, nothing happens when you click search.
