Since they bought out Peoples, tried to setup External Transfer, no can do, used out of network ATM, took out $20, they charged $7. I’m pulling out. I have Eastern Bank. They reimburse any fees you incur for an out of network ATM. Setup an External Transfer overnight. I like to have 2 banks, any recommendations? EDIT 12/27/22 Thanks for all the recommendations! I have a feeling others in Mass are also having problems and this may help them. There are a lot of posts under r/Connecticut same topic. I believe more Peoples branches got taken over

Go community bank/ credit union vs large banks. They may not have the sexiest looking website/ app but tend to have the best local ppl in banking. Since the deposits are local they tend to give loans in the community they serve and give back to local charities. Not all Community banks / credit unions are equal. Do a little research. If avoiding fees is your priority, ask to see their schedule of fees and account disclosures. See/ask what are ways to avoid fees. Prior to opening an account. If giving back to community is your thing look and see if the community bank/ credit union is giving back to your community or favorite local charity. If how they treat employees is your thing check and see industry employee surveys like Boston Globe Top places to work.

I grew up with M&Fee bank, also known as Muggers & Thieves.

Capital One has been awesome for 7 years.

That’s funny! Unfortunately that’s also the way I feel

I use Discover and Capital One. Discover because it was convenient at the time i opened it. And capital one i’ve always had good experiences with them and although they don’t really have many full banks they have cafe-style branches around me.

Or search for a good credit union for good loan interest rates. I’ve heard Navio is good in Cambridge and Somerville if you’re in that area.

Thanks! I prefer small banks, but they get bought out and become midsize, then bought out again, and become large. Everything gets more complicated because more people are involved, then fees go up, and finally they wonder where all the customers they bought went. I’ll check out credit unions, someone commented Salem 5

I love Middlesex Bank, and they’ve been independent since my parent moved here in the early 80s. (But they might not be in your area.)

I remember them from years ago, will have to check if they’re in my area

Rockland doesn't suck. Like, it's not great. But it doesn't suck. I really liked Cambridge Savings Bank when I lived in Somerville, but they have limited branches south of the Charles.

There’s a branch down the street from me. I was a member of Merrimack Valley CU years ago. Security was bad, I had debit card fraud, they didn’t seem to know what to do

I’ve been with DCU since 2007 and the couple fraud issues I’ve had since then, they were all over it. Great service when it comes to auto loans, etc. Also they reimburse out of network ATM’s and have free coin counters in their branches.

I would use Louie down the alleyway downtown for my banking needs before I would true M&T for anything. There have been a mass of horror stories in /r/Connecticut about them ever since they took over.

I changed 3 direct deposits this morning, some take a month, some 3 months. Nothing is better, everything is worse. Yeah I read some of those posts, a lot of state attorney general recommendations

I've used TD for years, it's convenient for me and they haven't done anything to piss me off yet. I also have accounts at a couple of national credit unions such as Penfed.

Find a credit union. Merrimack Vally Cu/Bridgewater CU is pretty good.

One of the hospitals I work in has an M/T ATM that’s always broken. That within itself tells me all I need to know about what their banking experience is like

They purchased our mortgage when we bought our first house, fucking terrible. They would send unpaid notices and fees because we overpaid, not the exact amount due.

Do not use. Stick with locally owned banks and credit unions. They are just as well insured against loss, and you're keeping your money closer to the community you live in.
