I don’t have a recommendation for you since I’m out in central mass. However, you could always tell strangers a simple excuse for not drinking if someone asks. You don’t owe anyone a full explain. Here are a couple you could use if prompted:

  • I’m on a medication that can’t mix with alcohol. What bad timing right?!?!
  • I’d like to but I’ve been training for a [insert athletic competition] and drinking makes that really difficult.
  • I’d driving tonight so just here to celebrate.

I don’t know if that’s helpful, but it’s all I got for you.

I don't drink. I just say 'i don't drink'. I don't explain further if people press the issue

It is First Night. Loads of alcohol free activities in the city tonight. Check out the fireworks at midnight.

I think they cancelled the fireworks because of the rain but I agree with you - theres 1st night downtown, Winter Classic stuff at City Hall & Fenway, and the Seaport Holiday Market

If you have a drink in your hand, even if it doesn't have alcohol, do people really bug you about it?

In my experience (as a straight man, at least), they don't. I'd just get a soda and nurse that for a while.

There are also non-alcoholic beers like Athletic Brewing and Heineken Zero, if that works for you.

Good news, if you're just getting a soda, it should only be a dollar or two. You should still tip like it's a regular drink ($1-2 for cans, drafts, and simple mixed drinks, 20% for cocktails that take skill). That doesn't include any cover though.

The weather should be rainy but mild, maybe a good time to walk around and people watch, see the sights, etc.

Soda with a twist and tip the tender a bit more. Most tenders will understand that you're trying to stay sober.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Boston has some of the worst nightlife out of any city in the US. Especially the gay clubs. You’re much better off going to a straight club and dancing there because they play music instead of horrible remixes at least. Was supremely disappointed when moving here from Philly where we have a vibrant fun gay culture to Boston — a dry, boring and clique-y culture.

You want to listen to WAP for 45 minutes? Not even the song, just the part where she says “wet ass p****” over and over and over? Because I’m not joking, that’s what you’re up against.

You’re a trooper.

If you actually want to have fun, I would suggest Providence gay clubs. Never been disappointed there with the crowd or music. Boston? Disappointed every time.

I never drink at Legacy, the hopping-est of the local gay clubs (though, to be fair, I am also never sober), and I don’t feel like anybody’s looking askance. Plenty of people don’t drink alcohol for various reasons and nobody’a gonna care to wonder why you specifically aren’t. Ask for a sparkling water with lime at the bar so you have something in your hand and if the bartender doesn’t charge you (50/50 shot in my experience) make sure to leave a couple bucks for him anyway (especially if it’s Rob, who is a literal angel).
