I can imagine the conversation where william Morgan says “hey, why not have the bottom removed to save the work needed to pull out the ladder, etc.”
James Naismith and his supporters- “GTFO and take your ball to Holyoke”

He was actually the one who decided to remove the bottom of the basket pretty soon after he invented the game. The basket was still too small for the ball to small through though, so they’d use a stick to push it out the top every time.

My friend told me once it should be credited to Holyoke, but they didn't want two Hall of Fames for sports in one city so Springfield got it. Can anyone confirm this or was he just yucking my yum.

I understand they used to use a ladder to get the ball out of it before the bottom finally fell out of it.
