Holyoke is not the center of Western Mass (neither geographically, politically, economically, socially, etc) and we should all be glad of that fact.

Once you go further West, yes, it does become more remote. The same is true if you go North and North, West. There are a few exceptions, such as Greenfield and Pittsfield, to name a few. But once you exit past Amherst or Westfield, depending on which way you're going (further north or further west), it's mostly country towns and woods.
