WhatsApp has been around way longer i think. It's very popular amongst my circles because we're immigrants. When 3G First came into my country around 10 years ago it was the best way to keep in touch and avoid exorbitant international fees. Our corrupt govt used to take a big cut of the fees for the calls in and out of the country. They even attempted to block third party messaging but thank fully didn't follow through.

There also used to be Viber and LINE

LINE is still incredibly popular and commonly used in Japan, where it first launched. It is far and wide the country's most popular messaging app, Twitter being second – cannot stress enough how massive the Japanese Twitter market is.
