While yes you can do that but if you're a new player and struggling in stormveil the rune loss can be annoying. And he traps you in a cell with a knight.

I killed the samurai dude early on because he attacked me under a bridge like a deranged hobo. I only found out later that he was an NPC with a quest line, who could also be summoned to help you fight that first dragon. Ah well, I got his katana
