It’s like social distancing for cars
Janus_The_Great t1_ja9jj0s wrote
Or you do it like the rest of the world and keep track of something the car in front passes by, start counting and stop counting when you pass that spot. If it's less than two seconds, you're too close. Bonus, it adapts for speed, you're literally counting down potential reaction time.
Do people not learn that in driving school in the US?
In Switzerland we still have markers sometimes, but they act as reminders. Counting is still safer.
Have a good one. Stay safe.
Planejet42 OP t1_ja9oyvz wrote
Yeah, but a lot of people also like to ride you. Like most structures put in place by the government, people who follow rules will follow. Others will still ride you.
louthelou t1_ja9qqkh wrote
The same could be said for the dots. They do provide some use as I’m sure they make some people aware of safe driving distance, but otherwise, they’re not changing anyone’s habits.
And frankly, the two-dot distance looks entirely too large on that road. You’d probably be fine with one.

Can't speak for every state, but I learned the 2 second rule, but nobody else I've talked to about it has any memory of it.
PA_Golden_Dino t1_jacfne6 wrote
Yep, taught that as well and use it regularly.
iPlod t1_jaaxd1v wrote
Unfortunately it’s hard to fix people being lazy. Id argue having the dots would probably have a noteable impact on people driving too close to the car in front of them simply because they don’t have to do the counting. If so, why not implement them?
Janus_The_Great t1_jaaxtiu wrote
if they even see the street in between their car ant the one infront of them.
But yeah sure. if it helps it helps.

Gotta be. Everytime I go that way I say “oooo the dots!” . Routinely surprised at how far apart they are, it’s like a solid 3/4 car lengths.
TwinB61 t1_jaappee wrote
I believe so I have been there too
only_utilitarian t1_ja9klbz wrote
Yep this should be standard. Here in the UK, it was traditional to pick a marker, like a sign for example and you would say a phrase. You'd start it as the vehicle in front passed the sign and if you got to it before finishing the phrase, you were too close.... judging attitudes to raid safety nowadays, I think this is largely forgotten.
The phrase was "only a fool breaks the two second rule".... Simple and effective.
sheepdo6 t1_ja9tras wrote
They have these on UK motorways. Not dots, but chevron arrows, you're supposed to stay two apart.
only_utilitarian t1_ja9u04x wrote
Yeah I know of some on M62 where the highest point is. Should be more common imo
twohusknight t1_ja9o4db wrote
You mean maintaining a constant approximate-second count and doing a stopping distance-to-second conversion in your head isn’t good enough for you lot?
NightStorm1000 t1_jacyv8f wrote
I guarantee you 90% don't even know they are supposed to keep a 2 Seconds safety distance.

You're not going to get any pull-along by the truck's wind if you stay more than a few feet back. You gotta nudge right up to that bumper.
