If that's a stack over a month, sure. If it's over some years, maybe just having fun.
TripleHomicide t1_ja729ya wrote
It's probably for the calendar year. Because if you win, you can deduct your lotto losses against the winning for that year.
AtheistET t1_ja7k6rl wrote
Nice to know that!

I hope this is all for an entire year. Anything less and I’d call it an addiction

Probably keeps them to deduct on taxes

this is probably a daily thing, i used to have a millionaire client that was confined to a wheelchair and she just spent all day scratching tickets

Lottery is a tax on the poor and/or stupid. Chasing an infinitesimally small chance of a win. Lots of stuff in life would be awesome if you won or achieved, doesn’t mean you burn money for it.
RoninSFB t1_ja8v7zr wrote
Well it depends. Chasing the jackpot on ticket drawings is a infinitesimally small chance of winning. And honestly spending a couple bucks when the jackpot is super high allows for a fun daydream, and isn't very harmful. Provided you keep it to just a few bucks which I know not everyone does.
What makes scratchers much more insidious is you DO have a good chance of winning, at least too FEEL like you do. If you buy 10 scratches you'll probably come out "ahead" on a few of them, but much like casino gambling over a large aggregation "The house always wins"

But he did hit that 1 $300 winner and those few $50 ones right?!
CrustyLoveSock t1_ja8l9xb wrote
Actually kind of smart to keep these around in case he does win big.

Small pile and low ticket prices. Unless he has no job then there is a problem.

My father had the same pile. Not scratch offs, though. He plays the state lottery where he lives. $5 two times a week, same five sets of numbers for probably 30 years. About 7 years ago he calls me late night. I thought he was dying when I saw his name come up because he never calls. I live several states away, and we mostly communicated via email. Long story short, he finally won the big one. I thought how big could a state lottery be with mega millions and powerball dominating most of the ticket purchases. I thought he maybe hit $100k. Boy was I way off. Multiple millions. Most surreal moment of our lives. He still plays twice a week.

More people should do this.

If your dad is a professional gambler (say, like, a pro poker player), then this stack is something he can use to offset his winnings on his taxes.
Or he could have a gambling addiction.
