Happens when snowflakes partly melt and then refreeze; the density and texture are halfway between snow and ice pellets.

Very cool if you ever saw a video of how dippin dots are made. It’s very similar to how graupel forms.

Also, it’s a German term, graupel, and we’ve changed nothing about the word in English so now you know a German term.
