Reminds me of Christmas a few years ago, a church near me went around handing out gift bags of festive food to everyone the neighbourhood despite having no affiliation with them. I'm not religious but thought it was lovely, the kind of Christianity I'd like to see more of

Wonderful! Maybe we can all share our fave easy and economical recipes here? I have been cooking from freezer and pantry the last few months to save $$$ and found a few delicious but budget-friendly meals I would make again!

My favourite, that I've also been having for about 4 - 5 months, is pasta (any type), a tin of soup, and fish fingers (though you could always replace it with anything of your choosing).

Easy and quick to make, and very filling.

I’m American, although I did live in the UK for about a year.

That said, I don’t recall ever seeing canned custard. What is the purpose of it? Just to eat, or is it more of a baking ingredient?

You can either eat it as is, or warm it up and pour it over your dessert. The latter is the better option, but there's no reason you can't just crack it open and skran.

I love custard, and can certainly imagine wolfing down a whole can of the stuff, but I definitely do not remember ever seeing one. Thanks for the explanation!

This has reminded me of my favorite British canned food that we don’t (widely) have in the US: mushy peas. Damn I could use a can or two . . .

You live in one of those "freedom-hating" countries, don't you?

As a 'murican I don't see such care... not 'round these 'parts.

But seriously, I hope you're doing okay, fellow Redditor. Also, our social assistance sucks.
