First thing I noticed, too. I live in Japan, shoes stay in the “genkan” or entrance area and never come further into the house.

There are special closets to store the shoes but that can be an issue. My sons play soccer so they have various sets of soccer shoes that get nasty - these we store in our garage.

Common in many Asian countries to keep shoes at the door in shoe racks or some apartments have dedicated closets for shoes.

Maybe if you have a huge selection you pick with your outfit, but most of us keep our shoes in the entrance, no?
