I found out the display port is 1.4 and the hdmi port is 1.4. Could it be the adapter might be the problem?

Nvidia does not support g-sync with a freesync monitor using hdmi. You have to use the usb-c to the DisplayPort on your monitor.

I suspected as much. The adapter I am using is no good either and I was hoping to use the extra power from directly connecting to the gpu using hdmi.

The USB-C w/ Displayport port is likely directly connected to your GPU.

for real? They are both on the back. One question, I'm probably overthinking it but can I just buy any usb c to displayport cable?

Should it be bi directional? I found this cable but it might not be bi directional but one of the commenters mentions that it can be used for g sync.

I just found out that my usb c port does not support alt mode which is needed for free sync. Is there any way around this aside from buying a new laptop?

It doesn't need at-mode, only Displayport, which the specs say you have.

Just buy a USC-C to diaplayport adapter and it should work.

Will this be ok? I already have a display port cable.
