This is personally something I love in every single one of his movies, no matter how bad the story or script is, Shyamalan always does a masterful job at implementing an atmosphere. From his highs like Sixth Sense, and unbreakable to his mid level movies like the Village, Knock at the Cabin, Visit the atmosphere is crafted masterfully and gives us real emotion and immerses us. Thoughts?

I’d say Kubrick does it better personally. The feeling of dread in the Shining. Unease in A clockwork orange, awe in 2001. The atmosphere is stronger than most films.

I cannot overstate how good The Shining is. I'd only ever seen it secondhand through the memes because I was too young to remember it and it was just a fabulous movie to sit through. Mr Grady in the bathroom still creeps me out.

I'd add Spielberg to the list too. Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List.

All completely different, but they're near perfect

The problem with Shyamalan is that even his films that build up a good atmosphere still tend to fall flat in the most important part, that of being a good film.

His movies are largely good. And the ones that are bad are usually bad in an interesting way.

Good director.

There is nothing interesting about After Earth or Avatar TLA, genuinely two of the worst blockbusters ever

I'm a fan of whoever did Shutter Island. The claustrophobic and foreboding atmosphere of that movie was brilliant.

That’s the legendary Martin Scorsese 💯

That explains a lot. He can even take a long tracking shot of approaching a dock and make it disturbing instead of boring.

Best ever? Nah, but that’s certainly something he’s good at.

I don’t think so. He’s certainly good at it and has an aesthetic he imparts on his films, but with people like Garland and Villeneuve out there, he’s far from the best at creating atmosphere.

Thank you for avoiding the use of the word 'masterclass' and instead change it to 'crafted masterfully' while still saying very little. Well done.

He is good at it but there are others. Tarantino is one. Another director is Chris Nolan who is also controversial like Shamalan because his later work has fallen off.

Probably not, but he's extremely good at it for sure.
