Sailor Moon Live Action Movie

Does anyone know who owns the film rights to Sailor Moon? The fact that there has never been any news of a live action Hollywood film in development is puzzling to me. With the rise of anime adaptations, it seems like the perfect time to do it. It would be a female-led ensemble superhero movie with action, comedy, romance and LGBTQ characters. It seems like something that Hollywood would be all over. As a fan I'd love to see it. There are many great actresses you could cast from many cultures. Does anyone know why this is not a thing and which studio actually owns the film rights?

Sailor Moon already has a live action adaptation, called Pretty Guardian. Done in Japan. Where it belongs.

As a fan of Sailor Moon, I beg Hollywood to stay the fuck out of it. Please.

You could debate that Alita isn't even a live action adaptation because the majority of the scenes are CGI anyway. There are human characters which make it live action but I feel like they fall flat compared to the better scenes which are animated anyway

And sailor moon would be a particularly difficult one to adapt and not feel like teen girl power rangers which I don’t think most people want to see. There’s a very long list of anime that are way better for adapting to live action than sailor moon, almost as long as the list of r/movie posts of someone’s really terrible idea for a live action anime adaptation.

Honest question but why do people care so much? It doesn’t take away from the original. Dragon Ball and Pokémon are still the most popular anime in the world despite DB Evolution and Detective Pikachu existing. If it sucks, oh well. If it’s good, awesome. Why get mad over it.

  • Hell even Black Swan is a good example being clearly based on Perfect Blue
  • Even Detective Pikachu shows that Hollywood are starting to understand the genre more. They keep getting better at it. As bad as the Death Note film was, Ryuuk was perfect.

It honestly wouldn't be that hard to make Sailor Moon if it had the right budget and the right people attached to it, people who are passionate about the source material which all the above had.

There's just an easy and simple aesthetic change required to make that work haha. As long as you've got the core of the characters and story right, the aesthetic can be flexible, they're not as important.

Sailor moon movie would be hard to make as it has to much fantasy aspects that would be impossible to bring to life the transformation scene alone would be nearly impossible to do for a live action

Why would any studio give themselves the headache?

Any change that a studio would do would cause fans to bitch incessantly about how the white actresses weren't accurate to the show. Never mind that all of the girls were coded as Caucasian in the Manga and both TV shows, anyone that isn't Asian is not accurate to the source.

The fanboys think adaptation means exactly like they remembered.
