To actually answer you, you should see whether you can get some Harry Potter themed snacks online somewhere (butter beer, pumpkin juice, those weird jelly beans, chocolate frogs, etc. I know they sell them at the theme parks but don’t know if they’re available elsewhere

Butterbeer. Get cream soda, caramel syrup, butterscotch syrup, and whipped cream. Tastes just like what they serve at hogwarts in Universal Studios

The bertie bott’s are a lot of fun! I definitely suggest getting those and there are also a few cool recipes for butter beer floating around (check youtube).

This could be bait. If you don't know the firestorm around this IP right now genuinely, even as someone who's upset about it, I recommend taking this to the harry potter sub because you'll get a lot less negative attention

Get some colored LED lights and you could blow their minds when the entertainment center starts glowing.

But that would be a mild personal sacrifice, which would be out of line. They want to shame other people into making personal sacrifices so they don’t have to.

Believing in two unchangeable genders isn't bigotry.

Two unchangeable biological sexes*. Gender is a construct, but you can't HRT your chromosomes into changing. There's a point to be made there, but you won't get anything across by conflating sex and gender.

What is gender exactly? Not trying to argue, I'm just curious

2

paulsammons3 t1_ja5iacc wrote

In this context I would say they mean gender to mean the “restrictions” society puts on those born male or female to do certain things or be a certain way. Men should be source of primary income, play football, get dirty, monster trucks, be in charge, etc. Women take care of children, wear dresses & make up, play with dolls, like to shop, cook, clean, etc.

1

A88_I99 t1_ja5le4q wrote

I sort of get what you're saying. You're basically just describing stereotypes and roles associated with being masculine or feminine.

The part that confuses me is that you don't have to be interested in playing football and getting dirty or being the primary source of income, etc. to be a man, and you don't have to wear make-up and dresses and enjoy shopping to be a woman. For example, if a guy doesn't like sports but likes clothes and shopping, does this mean that they are non-binary according to your definition of gender? It doesn't really make sense to me.

1

paulsammons3 t1_ja5mwvr wrote

I think the argument would then become, what’s the point of identifying a gender besides anything more than has a penis and has a vagina. It’s a construct because the identification is kind of pointless for non-science and sometimes sex related reasons. Which is why there’s more of a push to remove he/she and just make it they. I think.

1

A88_I99 t1_ja5okl3 wrote

Ya, that's what I'm confused about, I just don't really understand the point of the concept and why it's considered a whole separate category from sex.

1

paulsammons3 t1_ja5os3f wrote

What concept do you mean? Sorry.

1

A88_I99 t1_ja5pe2q wrote

The concept of gender in general, more specifically, the idea of being non-binary or gender being a spectrum.

1

paulsammons3 t1_ja5puzg wrote

Yeah I agree. It’s an unfortunate middle ground of a country split between only wanting “normal” gender terms and wanting them gone entirely.

A lot of us genuinely believe the reaction to the stories, and, more recently, the game have gone way overboard. It's fine to make the personal choice to boycott something, but don't shame others for enjoying a fantasy story.

I realize, to most of the people I'm talking about, the viewpoints of others matter very little, anyway. But, just know, the rest of us feel the same about you.

It’s the fact that she uses the money she makes to donate and push anti trans legislation and talking points. Keeping her a household name is actively working against us.

To you it’s a fun story, to marginalized communities it’s her source of income to fuel attacks against us. So sure, you’re allowed to read and enjoy Harry Potter. Just don’t call yourself an ally. Ally requires cooperation and working towards a goal set by the community.

PrecisionHat t1_ja54i0p wrote

I don't care if i am considered an ally or not, really. Not anymore. Not since that started to entail my strict adherence to a code prescribed by people like yourself. I'll support in the ways that I feel comfortable, regardless of whether or not you or others want to call me an ally.
