I haven’t laughed this hard at a movie in ages. I don’t have anyone to talk about it with because it’s been out for so long though 😅

I looked up the reviews and was surprised to find it has almost exclusively bad reviews! Either I have awful taste or it’s aged really well - definitely my new (old?) favorite comedy.

I love that movie! "WHATEVER MOTHER FUCKER!"

Broken Lizard has made some fantastic movies, with Super Troopers and Beer fest being the most well known ones, but this one always slips through the cracks.

Glad to see that they've been more active lately. Heffernan and Lemme's show Tacoma FD has been great and the whole group just finished filming a new movie.

It is the weakest of their movies (super troopers 2 never happened) but that is like saying John wick 3 is the weakest wick

rocker2014 t1_jaauddz wrote

Eh, it's better than Puddle Cruiser for sure. And while it's debatable, I personally prefer Slammin Salmon to Club Dread. Super Troopers 2 wasn't bad in my opinion. It wasn't near as good as the original, but it was decent.

Puddle Cruiser gave us “firstie, firstie girlie, girlie” which is still the first thing I think of when I meet a dude with a name like Tracy Madison.

Milk_A_Pikachu t1_jaaygff wrote

Super Troopers 2 retroactively makes Super Troopers a lesser film because of how completely unnecessary and "phoned in" it was

I can definitely see the argument for Club Dread being worse. Club Dread was... weird and a lot of the jokes were overall weaker. But I think it is a better representation of the Broken Lizard "vibe" of... just being really frigging weird and unnecessary. Which is exemplified by 1's climax being a "funny but bog standard" action sequence as the good cops (ugh) fight the bad drug dealers. And then we just have drunken Brian Cox beating the shit out of Daniel von Bargen and having that simultaneous "ha, this is funny" and "... why is this happening? How is this happening?".

I think super troopers 2 suffers from what a lot of comedy sequels suffer from. Coming 2 America, anchorman 2, etc. They aren't played earnestly and aren't grounded. They lean into the jokes instead of letting the situation be the joke.

Same with the movies Waiting and Still Waiting. All 3 of them are interchangeably accurate and funny

10

Hollow_Rant t1_jabfnql wrote

I didn't really vibe with Still Waiting but I still long for the day that I can Goat someone.

7

bugxbuster t1_jabftlc wrote

So when Waiting came out in 2005 is when I started working at a restaurant a lot like that one, and I’m not kidding, there was a lot of that ball showing game going on with the kitchen guys for like a year. I honestly can’t even remember if I did it too, I very well might have. Lol

The movie is worth watching just for Michael Clarke Duncan going all in on the comedy. He was hilarious. "Straighten your tie, Guy... Oh, are you gonna cry, Guy?"

I know I think that was half the reason I liked it so much - I wish he was still around!

2

I already have. It's not as good as Super Troopers, Beer Fest, and Club Dread, but it's still good for a laugh.

I’m about to rewatch super troopers to compare! I actually think I liked this better but it’s been a year or two lol

I thought salmon was worse than beer fest and super troopers, but better than club dredd.

And which still means I thought it was pretty good

10

stardewcallie OP t1_jaaufnx wrote

See I didn’t even know beer fest and club dredd existed so I have to watch these too to get the full scale-

I think club dread is their best work but beerfest is the most fun.

Was excited to watch this when it was released on dvd years back, and man was it was disappointing.

I watched Puddle Cruiser on IFC back in the 90s and laughed my ass off. Then 01 rolls around and my roommate rents a movie from blockbuster and the preview for Super Troopers comes on. They all looked at me like I was crazy because I jumped up, pointed at the screen and told them we're going to go see it when it comes out. I got the last laugh though as they were pissing themselves in the theater when it came out.

1

Seahearn4 t1_jad18qs wrote

Don't forget that they made Dukes of Hazzard, too!

Its literally the movie this was spun off of.

Dunno what you think spun off means but it’s not this.

…unless you think Slammin Salmon is the movie Still Waiting, in which case that’s more accurate

3

vermilionpulseSFW t1_jabfai9 wrote

Well thats embarrassing. I may not have ever seen Slammin and literally thought Still Waiting was it. ouch. I am wrong.

3

bugxbuster t1_jabfkt6 wrote

Well hey, if you like the super troopers guys then check out Slammin Salmon! It’s a solid flick. Personally I’d rate it in between the two Waiting films.

I’ve been a waiter and bartender for more than half of my life (mostly in bar and grill type places like Shenanigans in Waiting), these movies will never get old for me.

Broken Lizard are super hit or miss imho.

Super Troopers, Club Dread, Beerfest, and Slammin Salmon were anywhere from decent to great.

Super Troopers 2 was not very good at all.

And I saw their new one coming out soon, Quasi, and that’s one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Astoundingly terrible.

5

bugxbuster t1_jabephk wrote

What’s Quasi like? I wasn’t aware of it at all

It’s the story of quasimoto with the Broken Lizard guys.

Granted it was a screening, but literally the whole thing was terrible. Just absolutely dreadful. I think it’s going on Amazon Prime or one of the streaming services soon.
