dude’s going to explode once his Joker makes a formal Batman debut. His deleted scene was great (I get why it was cut), he looked like character in a gritty David Fincher thriller

I hated the deleted scene lol. The dialogue was poor and his whole performance was just talking slowly. Did not feel like the Joker.

I think I'm just sick of the Joker at this point. It could be the greatest performance ever and I'd still just roll my eyes.

In the past fifteen years we've had TDK joker, Suicide Squad Joker, Solo Joker, and now Irish Joker. Plus if you're into games, Hamil Joker reprised his role. Too many jokers!!!

It's been done every way possible. Joaquin found a new way, but the character has been nailed on several occasions. It's done.

those are very valid points now that I think about it. Like I said, I get why it was cut for reasons beyond runtime. But I do like how it wasn’t another beat-em’-up interrogation or a Gotham City face off. And I did have to watch it with subtitles since it was hard to understand him at parts

Animated_effigy t1_jady47b wrote

Man do I disagree with this statement. Thought that scene was garbage, Keoghan has the same problem as Gerard Butler, he can't completely get rid of his accent.

Possibly earlier. He is in the new WW2 miniseries that Spielberg and Hanks are producing, similar to Band of Brothers and The Pacific.

Its on Apple TV tho and not HBO. Due this spring.

Also featuring the fella who just recieved praise for his performance in the Elvis Bio-flick and other really good young talents.

I disagree. It just felt like an imitation of Heath Ledger with the surface level alteration of "what if I did Heath's joker, but I was a full-blown mental patient?" It was very obvious and cheesy.

I liked pretty much everything about The Batman except for the awful sneak peek of his Joker that they left in the movie at the end. It almost bombed the floor out on my whole experience.

Pliolite t1_jaf04b9 wrote

I just want the Joker from the comics. This ain't it.

I was afraid Trey Edward Shultz had stepped away after Waves did not perform well financially. Seemed like he poured everything into it and it really came and went without much consideration from general audiences.

I adore that movie and his filmography in general, so I’ll be there day one for this.

The only thing that was awful about it was the marketing/misleading trailer. That’s unfortunately a reoccurring thing with A24 movies.

It Comes at Night was fantastic.

11

darkness_escape t1_jaeq9pe wrote

I thought it was dreadful. Even gave it a second viewing. Just did nothing for me. And I like psychological horror. Night House was my favorite movie in years

−8

thelongernow t1_jaeqh0x wrote

That’s fine, but I still wouldn’t call it one of the worst movies out there by any stretch.

The opening 40 minutes or so are so intense and then it finally let's up and you can breathe but you are still 100% invested in the story. Great movie!

Not sure if Abel has any acting chops but as a fan of Trey Edward Schults, Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan I’ll be watching this.

I think Waves is overall one of the best movies A24 has released.

Now I just need David Robert Mitchell to announce his next movie and I’ll be happy.

He was solid as hell in Uncut Gems.

The article title specifies that it’s The Weekend’s original idea that he then later teamed up with Shultz to direct and co-write for

BobRobot77 t1_jadu5gi wrote

Unpopular opinion (maybe): I hate it when famous singers use their fame and influence to force themselves in Hollywood. Just let real actors and film creatives who don’t have your fame have a chance. It’s already too difficult as it is, and now they have to compete against famous people who decided on a whim some Sunday night that they wanted to be in Hollywood.

Dirtyswashbuckler69 t1_jadweom wrote

On the other hand though, The Weeknd’s attachment to this film may be one of the reasons why it’s even able to get made. I’m sure that Shults, whose last few films basically came and went, will enjoy the exposure that’ll come with having a film starring The Weeknd under his belt, as it’ll probably allow him to keep making his smaller films.

64

TheBlackSwarm t1_jadx4j3 wrote

You would think Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan being attached to this would be enough they are quickly becoming the top rising actors in the industry.

I don’t know how to feel about The Weeknd his talent level in terms of acting is undetermined right now he does have a HBO show with Sam Levinson that’s supposed to release this year though.

12

Dirtyswashbuckler69 t1_jae5um4 wrote

Per the article, it sounds like Keoghan and Ortega became attached after The Weeknd’s involvement, as he and Shults had been working on the film together for quite sometime before reaching out to them. I wouldn’t be surprised if The Weeknd’s attachment is what helped get this film on Ortega and Keoghan’s radar.

All of the Weeknd's music videos are pretty much works of art.

His sensibilities seem to align with auteurs like Trey Edward Shults and Safdie Brothers (Uncut Gems supporting role).

Well, the guy I replied to is making a valid point. It does happen a lot and it’s been going on for way too long. If you’re not a fan of The Weeknd I can see why his role in this movie’s development could come across like just another celeb looking for Hollywood money.

The Weeknd is a huge movie buff and also is making his own HBO show right now. Not saying that qualifies him, but his heart is there.

I'm an old fuck (by internet standards) and also a weeknd fan, but I am actually a pretty recent fan. My first actual contact with something weeknd was when I saw him in Uncut Gems and read the whole discussion about him playing a younger version of himself whatever. I liked him in the movie.

Then he did after hours and dawn fm which are both great 80s throwbacks for an old fuck like me and I became a fan.

13

GatoradeNipples t1_jaen4sg wrote

Check out his original mixtapes (most easily found as the album Trilogy). They're more standard R&B than his later stuff, but it's some of the best standard R&B ever recorded.

High For This goes unfathomably fucking hard and might actually be my favorite album opener of all time.

I mean is he really forcing himself into hollywood, if he is the one that started developing this movie? It's not like he stole anyone's part, he created it himself.

As long as they're talented and put in good performances, I don't really care where they come from. Lady Gaga is really good. Harry Styles is okay, he can always get better.

David Bowie was great as Nikola Tesla in the Prestige and it's no surprise he was Denis Villeneuve's first choice to play Niander Wallace in Blade Runner.

Also studios and producers want to make money and if they think a singer is going to sell more tickets than that's what they'll go with.
