I must say I have to disagree with the Departed. Matt Damon was good but he definitely did not outshine Leo. If anything I would say Jack Nicholson just because well he's Jack Nicholson and he rocks.

Hardy and JGL didn't "outshine" him in Inception either. OP seems to have left quite a bit of his best work off the table.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape

Catch Me If You Can

The Aviator

Blood Diamond

Shutter Island

The Wolf of Wall Street

The Revenant

Now Tom Hardy in the Revenant may of outshined him. I can't understand a word that motherfucker says in that movie, but I can't look away when he's on screen.

It's Hardy's film all the way, should have won for best supporting actor for me. it's a bit like with Leo with Day Lewis in Gangs of New York. You just can't keep your eyes off Hardy anytime he's on screen, he's got a bit of that danger to him that not many actors today have. Leo is very good in it, but Hardy when he's not doing blockbusters is one of the best actors around.

I thought The Departed gave us Leo's career-best performance imo, along with Blood Diamond (which came out the same year).

Best actor imo... Even back in Basketball diaries he was good.

Matt Damon got the rattiness feeling down & Jack was mr.cool. But Leo was def the standout for me like you could actively feel his constant state of anxiety like he was constantly on the edge in every scene( & that’s what a undercover cop should feel like). But he also nailed the kinda city boy hotheaded criminal gang dude on the outside but actually intelligent & heart of gold on the side complexity the character had. Like every scene he was in was great
