**possible spoiler I was recently watching the movie in the title recently with my partner and we saw the part where Moses drops 5 commandments. I mentioned the joke I've heard before about the scenario but he had never heard of it, just known it was part of a movie. To be fair I went to church and believe in God, he stopped attending church well before me and is between atheist/agnostic. I've been trying to search if the joke originated from the movie but am not too sure. Does anyone know? Thank you in advanced!

There may be a little Mandela Effect on this, but the movie was the first time I remember seeing it though it feels like it may have been a joke before. The idea that Moses adjusted on the fly fits, especially since one of the named commandments was though shalt not murder and it was the first thing he ordered after he came down from the mountain the first time.

It's a pretty schticky joke, I would not be surprised if some version of it predates the film. A lot of the jokes in the film are also exaggerations of historical rumours, jokes, stereotypes, truths etc. It's not like every scene or bit is a new idea created from whole cloth.

The joke (and various versions of it) absolutely predates the film and goes back many generations, don’t forget where Mel Brooks comedic roots are from. It’s funny because if you know your Bible stories, you know that according to (scripture, myth, whatever you want to call it) there were multiple versions of the commandments in the source material anyway.

The bible is essentially a collection of stories/books, compiled illustrating the essence of the human condition. The gag could be pointing out the many interpretations/edits and omissions made over the course of time to suit the needs of those in power. Or it could just be that after inhaling the smoke from that burning bush that Moses got a little loopy…

It wouldn't surprise me if there was a joke about the 10 Commandments originally being 15 that predates the movie. George Carlin did some jokes about the commandments, though his was more of taking them from 10 to like 3 or 4.

2 commandments:

  1. Thou shalt always be honest and faithful to the provider of thy nookie

  2. Thou shalt try really, really hard not to kill anyone… unless their invisible man in the sky is different from your invisible man in the sky
