Bro took a huge jump from Critters 3, to Gilbert Grape.

fishstock t1_jdz31n1 wrote

The first time I saw him was in Gilbert Grape, I remember thinking it was cool that they had a mentally handicapped actor in the movie.

92

ArcadePinball t1_jdzg4b7 wrote

Then he was in Titanic, and we thought the same thing again, except he was a talented artist.

36

BeginningAppeal8599 t1_jdz5ow8 wrote

And from then onwards he was very demanding of directors, maybe that's why he rarely works with some again.

11

Edelmaan t1_je2x7j2 wrote

Could that be the largest jump from debut film to second film in terms of quality/reception?

1

cbbuntz t1_jdyzoob wrote

He sure has worked with a lot of great directors though

123

jankyeyes OP t1_jdz0s4h wrote

That was his credo after Titanic, I believe. To only work with A list directors.

BeginningAppeal8599 t1_jdz6gja wrote

I thought he got very vocal about changing his characters in the 2000s but I recently heard Cameron say he brought his dad in and they wanted to add some ideas to the character and story.

I agree but it's kinda funny that he plays a guy whose wife has a mental breakdown and he is troubled by her death, being the main plot point in two movies, both of which came out in 2010.

26

immaownyou t1_je0u7sn wrote

Sure, but his characters in Shutter Island and Inception are different

16

RemoteDiscount7439 t1_je0vvyz wrote

Agreed, but it's uncanny how similar the two movies are.

Leo hallucinates about his wife and children in both, both movies have major and important sequences in heavy rainfall and snow, and at the end, in both movies it is revealed that >! Leo's characters actions was what had led to the death of their wives- planting an idea or murder out of rage !<

11

BeginningAppeal8599 t1_jdzs9i9 wrote

Very interesting. You'd think that's the one thing he'd have told Nolan to consider changing when he made him go rewrite for 6 months.

And Schwartz from a Christmas Story.

2

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year t1_je1ma3n wrote

There's a lot of good and probably even great directors who are not considered A-List. There's also some considered A-List who are a bit whiffy, I'm sure.

jofreal t1_jdz3gwt wrote

Sounds like he’s finally working with PTA too. PTA originally wanted him for Dirk Diggler.

I hope he works with Fincher someday. Fincher shot a Red camera test with Leo lighting up a stogie in the dark. Pitt and Leo reuniting in a Fincher would be epic. Pitt was originally supposed to be the Damon character in Departed I believe.

93

BeginningAppeal8599 t1_jdz6bb1 wrote

Wow, I hadn't heard they were working together😃

When I heard PTA and Tarantino joke that Leo is quite intense about some scenes I knew he was still chasing him.

I thought for a bit that PTA cast his dad in Licorice Pizza because Leo turned down the film.

24

RDeschain1 t1_jdzl748 wrote

Just watched Licorice Pizza 2 days ago. My god what a charming movie. But i dont see how Leo would have fit into it.

6

Pizzapopper57 t1_jdzok0d wrote

I could see him in Bradley Cooper’s role.

17

theodo t1_je3afdo wrote

I believe he was up for that, because the casting jokes I heard were about how Cooper replaced DiCaprio twice, in that and Nightmare Alley (which DiCaprio for sure had been cast in)

1

BeginningAppeal8599 t1_jdzrss7 wrote

I don't see it as well but then again I can say that about a few of his roles that he owned even before his mature looks.

2

RTJMFer t1_jec69zf wrote

>Sounds like he’s finally working with PTA too. PTA originally wanted him for Dirk Diggler.

I'm glad that didn't work out. He's great but that part was perfect for Wahlberg. I don't know if Leo could pull off the dumb guy as well.

2

nowhereman136 t1_jdz2gj1 wrote

Surprised he hasn't done another with Spielberg.

92

BeginningAppeal8599 t1_jdz5xam wrote

Maybe he might've been in consideration for the upcoming Spielberg film if he was younger assuming they ended on good terms.

But this would be the 3rd role that Bradley Cooper has taken instead of him after he couldn't do Nightmare Alley and Licorice Pizza.

37

AlanMorlock t1_jdzzyt6 wrote

Anderson has denied that he was in talks for Licorice Pizza. His dad is in it though!

18

arealhumannotabot t1_je0vv5f wrote

I don't think Spielberg does a lot of movies that Leo would act in. Not about quality, but the choices he makes. Leo seems to have really gotten into genre movies more and more.

Other than Titanic does he do much standard comedy/drama? I don't think so...?

12

nowhereman136 t1_je11bel wrote

As much as I enjoyed Paul Dano, I think DiCaprio could've played Mr Fabelman

War Horse, Munich, and Tintin could've been good for DiCaprio also. They might have been smaller roles than he's use to but he took the smaller role for Django

DiCaprio tends to do exciting dramas like Revenant, Hollywood, and Shutter Island, but he's branched out. Don't Look Up was a straightforward comedy. Revolutionary Road and J Edgar were simple period dramas with almost no action. J Edgar even feels like a Spielberg movie in the vain of Lincoln and War Horse.

Leo gets every script in Hollywood first, and then it goes to everyone else. One of few who get to pick which project they work on.

LoverOfForms t1_je27i7s wrote

Maybe they are sworn enemies. Maybe Leo's an anti-semite or something. Not trying to start rumors-- Leo is one of my favorite actors... But it does seem odd...

−13

YourmomgoestocolIege t1_je2ok21 wrote

So every actor that's only done one Spielberg is an anti-Semite, got it.

4

LoverOfForms t1_je3qryj wrote

Leonardo DiCaprio is literally the most in-demand actor in Hollywood. People say that all scripts pass through him on their way to anybody else.

I'm just saying that a hyperproductive class A talent only working once with another class A talent is a little odd.

Also notice that the first thing I said was maybe they are enemies. Maybe Leo slept with Spielberg's daughters. Maybe he insulted Spielberg's directing. It could be literally anything is the point-- including something as jarring as antisemitism. It's probably not that, but it could be anything. So let's not pretend that every other actor that has worked with Spielberg once is on the same level as Leonardo DiCaprio. That's just silly.

He didn't seem that fond of it in that interview he was talking about his films.

And when he's already turning down the likes of Del Toro, Chazelle and others it's not likely he'll accept such big physical films at his age and when he's not working that mich anymore.

I don't feel like this statistic is all that unusual. Pick 5 more actors of similar stardom/popularity and longevity and I bet most of them have 2-4 multi-time directors.

It got mixed reception, not bad. Even if it's slated if there's something in it that spoke to you or really grabbed you you don't have bad taste for liking it. Art, even commercial art, is very subjective. The best stuff is only even considered the best because of majority consensus. If the best for you is something else, then you're not wrong for thinking so.

I know it would and probably should never happen, but a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood could be fun, mainly because I loved hanging out with those two characters. In the novelization, they explore how his career got a boost from saving Sharon Tate and friends, so they could portray that. Maybe they can accidentally prevent another tragedy.
