I watched it on a plane. It was a bad idea. Michelle Williams man. I sobbed, like uncontrollably. Not awesome at altitude.
The "confrontation" between Michelle Williams and Casey Affleck near the end of this movie, fuck me. Williams is a 10/10 in that scene, Casey goes to another plane. Their pain hits you like a truck.
For me personally it was the most gripping and emotional performance I've seen in my lifetime. Happy it got the recognition it deserves at the Oscars
Oh man, so did I. There was a lot of lip biting and staring out the window!
Yeah. The like 1 frame of shock and disappointment on his face when the gun didn't go off messed me up.
The delivery of a single word, "PLEASE!" was enough to emotionally scar me. If you've seen the film, you know what I'm talking about.

"How about Manchester By The Sea, everybody? Casey Affleck plays a morose, withdrawn man from the outskirts of Boston, living under the shadow of his older brother. What a reach!" Nick Kroll, 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards
That sounds like a comedy.

I'd say toxic comments on this site are worse than ignorant ones
Both bad but morons are the ones being manipulated so easily by billionaire interests. Outrage is also addicting so toxic people fall under that to an extent as well.

Oh Jesus you're really still going aren't you
Edit : Also Michelle Williams is excellent in the few scenes she gets in the film.
That one scene where they run into each other on the street… cuts right through me everytime
If you’ve never seen Wendy & Lucy a bit more substantial Michelle Williams role
Dude yes that scene is devastating
"You can't just die!"
^^^^^"Honey..."
“You can’t just die”
Lol I feel like someone needs to say that to me
Hey!!
You can’t just die!
Haha thank you and know I’m imagining you as crying Michelle Williams

He really did. It felt like he wasn’t even acting. One of the best performances ever out of seemingly nowhere
Casey Affleck had always been known as a supporting actor till then. Even in (imo) his best performance before this film, in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, he was still nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, even though he was arguably the protagonist of that film.
But Manchester by the Sea had him front and center with nowhere to hide, and he proved himself as an incredible talent on his own merits.
If you haven’t seen it, I love his performance in The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford
And Gone Baby Gone. Although nothing seemingly outside his chops, but he's certainly an underrated actor.
He is better actor than his brother
yes, he stood out more than Ben in Good Will Hunting and his role is smaller.
Yes!!! He played a weasel so well I’ve never been able to watch a Casey Affleck movie since
One of the best movies ever made. Currently waiting on Andrew Dominik to capture lightning in a bottle again
I’m a huge Killing Them Softly fan as well. It’s not as good I’ll admit, but still one of my favorites
KtS has lots of good stuff in it, Assassination is just on a whole other transcendent level of filmmaking
Characters like that creep me out. Possibly bc I see how those characters could be me if I didn't have a conscience or if I had just had a significantly different upbringing. They are faced with many choices and paths that I've encountered as well. Thankfully I've chosen much better, but I look at those characters and see a version of myself that could have been. His performance of Robert Ford chills me to my core.
and The Killer inside Me (even if the actual film is sickening)

One of the most emotional films I’ve ever seen. Had me in tears.
I gave up watching it twice because I thought it was boring maybe something is wrong with me everybody else seems to like it
That's kind of the point, the 1st half shows how he's so empty and dead inside, then the 2nd half shows why
Because the second half is by far the most emotionally impactful part of the film.
It was so good that everyone just magically forgot those sexual assault allegations.
Thank you!!!!
Like.... I don't care how good of an actor he is he's still a POS.
You can criticize an actor as a person and still praise their performance.
It would be silly not to think that Woody Allen, Roman Polanski and Luc Besson are, or at least were incredibly great filmmakers, all that whilst not excluding the fact that they're rapist and molesters.
They are not mutually exclusive.
Right?! But wait he’s a good actor so who cares i guess lol
Both can be true. It can be a great performance from a shitty person.
How can you say this lol. He won the Oscar for it, but just look at his IMDb page after. It's quite clear the sexual harassment suits tanked his career post-Manchester.
I think it’s fair to say the allegations tanked his career, based on a quick look at his credits from the last 5 years. A movie like Manchester, which won him the Oscar, would normally launch an actor’s career into the stratosphere. He’s still working on indie projects but the allegations seem to have halted the upward trajectory he had in 2016.

Dude just google it and stop normalizing sexual abuse.
Nobody claimed sexual abuse from Casey Affleck. Don’t normalize making shit up.
Harassment is a far cry from sexual abuse. Is the same difference between calling a person a name and punching them.
Also, other cast and crew members defend him. So, the jury is out, and likely will always be.
White's original allegations included claims that Affleck hired transvestite prostitutes "for his personal gratification" during filming, referred to women as "cows", manhandled her when she rejected his sexual advances and instructed a camera operator to flash his genitals at her on several occasions. Gorka claimed she was subjected to a "near daily barrage of sexual comments, innuendo and unwelcome advances" by crew members, encouraged by Affleck.

While you’re technically correct that I didn’t know the apparent legal differences between abuse, assault, and harassment, my point stands.

I dunno you sure deleted that comment real quick lol
Wtf kind of comment is that???? Are you an incel???
I can’t decide which delivery of his breaks me more: “Please!” or “I can’t beat it.”
He absolutely nails depression and anxiety.
The scene where he runs into Michelle Williams under the bridge is absolutely heartbreaking.
To convey that he can say hi and nice to meet you and pops out an excuse as why he’s been absent immediately.
The feeling of thinking you have a mask in place only to be torn off by the person you least want it to be torn off by. And the realization that you don’t have your shit together and everyone knows it.
That you want desperately to be better. But can not find a foothold and the idea of a coffee with your ex wife is enough to make you physically unable to speak. Then immediately go into a bar and get in a fight because you don’t know how to process your grief or guilt.
It’s a master class in acting by everyone in that movie.
When he is identifying his brother at the morgue, I always watch his hands.
if you like him due seeing this movie, check out "the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford" :) Also a glorious piece of acting by him!
In my top ten movies of all time. And it's one of the most historically accurate movies I've ever seen. The director understood that, if you do it right, history can be more interesting than fiction.
True, but you know the ending beforehand. None the less as i saw the 2008 "Valkyrie" i was thrilled till the end! Even with knowing how it'll end.
that dunkin scene gave me chills
I still think about that movie all the time. I think Banshees will have the same effect on me, I think about that movie almost every day since I’ve seen it
incredible movie
just so heavy but in a good way
I never want to watch it again.
Better than Ben
Watch him in, Light of my Life. He’s just as good in that one.
Although I thought the movie was overall pretty boring, I will praise it for how realistic it was. The acting, characters, and plot were all so well done in a way that it didn’t feel like it was going over the top for the sake of entertainment.
You might also enjoy I Know This Much Is True, a 6-hour miniseries on HBO, in which Mark Ruffalo plays a pair of identical twins. I'm halfway through it now. It's very emotionally intense, and Ruffalo renders the different personalities of the two brothers magnificently.
The scene where they ran into each other on the street just wrecked me.
The performances from the two leads were just amazing. It takes some guts to be so vulnerable that it moves people so much.
Check out Michael Shannon in Take Shelter -there is a scene in a community centre during a meal fundraiser that will blow your mind.
Totally agreed. That movie wrecked me. Now I've gotta watch it again and get wrecked again.
Yeah, that was such a great, gut wrenching performance and all around sad but well done movie. I might need to rewatch it this weekend.
Love his performance here too https://youtu.be/FSvNhxKJJyU
He nailed depression and desperation.
One of my top movies ever. Seen it maybe four times. You’re right he’s amazing in it and actually after seeing him in that I watched a lot of his other movies. He was incredible in MBTS. You could feel his pain in every scene.
Props for seeing it four times. I love the movie but immediately decided after my first viewing: never again.
I’ve probs watched it once a year the past four years lol. I’m a depressive ass though so I relate I watch loads of stuff on that spectrum. The only movie I’ve ever watched that I have no desire to watch again cos it destroyed me is dancer in the dark.
I love that movie. It’s depressing, yet very funny
So good!!!
Agreed - amazing realistic performances by all. So glad he won the Oscar.
I agree.
It's in my list of all time favorite movies. The directing / acting is on point and comes across as so real.
this movie is a genuine piece of work and it made me really want another hit.
Manchester by the sea in general is just a fantastic movie, but yeah Casey is absolutely phenomenal in it, the Oscar award was totally deserved.
Yep.Loved the movie and the performances!

Agreed! I was astonished by his acting.
One of the most underrated parts of his performance is how likable and fun he is before the tragedy
This movie stands in a league of its own, can anyone recommend some movies which match the tone or vibe that this movie has?
Casey>>>>> Ben
Meh.
It was actually bad.
I felt like he was doing a Giovanni Ribisi impression for the whole movie.
I found him so off putting I had to Google if he was on drugs on set or what. Especially the scenes that happen before the film’s central tragedy. He’s all over the place and mumbly and the timing of his delivery is weird as shit.

The police station scene was so fucking painfully real. His performance there fucked me up when I first saw it.
