Probably been asked a million times before

Mine are:

  1. The Last of the Mohicans

I listen to the soundtrack and imagine that final chase scene when I'm at the gym and it always helps to dig a little deeper. I'm Daniel Day Lewis and 10km is nothing, there's still Wes Studi to tear through at the end of it all. I can do this.

  1. The Raid 2.

The final 40 or so minutes literally blows anything left of your mind away that hasn't already been decimated by the rest of the film. Possibly the most intense cinema experience I've ever had (except for 1..)

A lot of Edgar Wrights movies are really good throughout but all just go fucking nuts at the end.

Den Of Thieves had one of the best sounding shootouts I've experienced in recent memory.

The Shawshank Redemption

Red crossing the border and making it to Mexico is his final triumph over institutionalization and his redemption as a human being. The growing realization that Red is the one that gets redeemed, and not Andy, is pretty profound. Andy didn't need redemption. He had faith the entire time. Red needed to be saved, and Andy's faith saved him.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Chief killing McMurphy as a mercy and leaving the institution so he can begin living again is the same story as the above, just with different characters. Can you tell I like redemption stories?

Big Fish

The final realization that his father's stories all held a kernel of truth, and all the myriad characters were real utterly transforms the son in the final scene. He wasn't necessarily a liar, just someone who saw the romanticism of life and brought it out.

Watched Shaun last week and hot fuzz last night. The end of fuzz is so good. They get to use every action cliche they've built up to. I had forgotten it's about petty annoyances which makes the high stakes even better.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Starting from when The Ecstasy of Gold begins to play all the way up to the credits is one of the greatest climaxes in film.

The Prestige

I never knew a movie could occupy my brain as much as this one does. I just did my fourth rewatch and I’m still catching things I didn’t see before. Incredible film.

Hot Fuzz’s finale takes the movie from, “Pretty good” to “This is one of the greatest movies I’ve ever seen.” Everything comes together. I can’t imagine the cheering in the theater opening night.

I'll mention two comedies with fantastic scripts and near perfect, very satisfying last acts:

My Cousin Vinny and Galaxy Quest.
