As far as football movies go this one is an imperfect gem. Great performances all around, very good, unconventional cinematography and the depiction seems brutally realistic. Audio could use some work though, you can barely understand the dialogue 1/3rd of the time.

Even when it gets preachy the characters in the film are rolling their eyes at it because they know it's manipulative bullshit just meant to eke the last bit of performance out of them while they're still useful.

The funny part, and what pushes the film almost into fantasy, is how Willie Beamen acted and was treated after winning two games. No way a third string quarterback is talking shit to the head coach, fellow players, starring in his own commercial and music video after a couple of good games, even if he is a magical combination of Peyton Manning and Michael Vick (who somehow dropped to the 7th round šŸ˜‚).

I would watch a entire movie of James Woods being the sleazy team doctor.

The book its roughly based off of is more about the sports medicine aspect and would have made a better movie if it was more about Modine & Wood's characters.

You're Okay, It's Just a Bruise: A Doctor's Sideline Secrets by Robert Huizenga, who was an intern doctor for the Raiders in the 80s

One of my favorite books and totally worth a read. Love the insight and section about Bo Jackson getting signed. I suggest it to people all the time.

The editing of early 2000s blockbusters is so crazy, its almost nauseating fast. This and Amegeddon come to mind. I assumed Oliver Stone just made soemtjing more akin to propaganda films basically growing up but he's actually pretty daring in terms of content. I liked talk radio quite a bit.

I love that shit.

I love the whole hyperbolic and romanticized take on the game and the players. Stone is so at home in the quintessentially American.

The talking shit about coaches and players I can see. The commercial and music video stuff is when it goes into la la land.

The behind the scenes is even crazier *jamie and LL hated eachother. And Lawrence Taylor and Dennis quaid used to just fuck off between scenes and go golf
