It was hard to tell if he was a villain like he didn't even wanna take her out and mildly flirted and when the climax was about to happen it looked like he shook his head in disapproval. I think he also went to put his hand on her shoulder for comfort after it did happen. It was hard to tell if he was just playing along or not.

Which is actually similar to Carrie herself since she's half innocent and half evil.

Like BEE_REAL stated, he had fallen for her. And you can tell he actually had sympathy for her by the end, because she is pure of heart, and what I love is that when she does what she does at the end she is lashing out like a scared animal. Unlike the remake where she seems to actively take joy in doing it

Yes he's clearly fallen for her by the end of the prom

He's doing it as a favor to his girlfriend at first (But even in the asking out scene I don't think he feels as if a gun is to his head to be there) but I wasn't super confident in his and Sue's relationship right before everything went to shit.

Also, iirc, in the book I believe there's a hinting that Tommy also has a touch of the shining to him and that's part of why they end up vibing so well. But also Tonmy Ross is just a great guy overall and absolutely didn't deserve to get taken out that way.

I just read it and didn't pick up on this at all. Carrie was also released before The Shining even came out. Care to explain?

He liked her, but I don't think he was interested in her. He was just a decent guy.

I don’t think he’s ‘into her’, but he definitely takes a shine to her and sympathises with her by the end. I imagine if the prom had gone without incident, he would have remained that way and been a friend to her. Makes the finale all the more heartbreaking actually.

True.

Tommy's silent "WHAT THE HELL?" when the blood bucket hits his head is one of the most memorable scenes ever. So sad he died with most of the school.
