Did NORBIT cost Eddie Murphy the Oscar for DREAMGIRLS?

Personally, I think voters just didn't like Eddie Murphy but I do remember how many voters were disgusted with the trailer of NORBIT and some wondered that giving him the Oscar to then have him come out with the lowest common denominator of a movie, maybe the Academy didn't want to reward mediocrity so they gave the Oscar to Alan Arkin in LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, a just average performance of a tired cliche, the pervy granddad.

Today, NORBIT would have come out with Monique or Lizzo as Rasputia, not a man in a fat suit and prosthetics.

And Thandie Newton said no to MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3 but said yes to crap like this. Go figure!

They just don’t give Oscars to funny people. Like, Jim Carrey deserved it once if not twice.

Sandler too. One of the voters outright said they would not even vote him to be nominated because of the other movies he makes. Sandler can fucking bring it in a serious role.

Hugh Jackman had balls on his chin in a movie the same year he did Prisoners. Movie 43 also came out about three weeks after Les Miserables, and he was nominated for best actor in Les Mis. I don’t think one had anything to do with the other

Alan Arkin gave a memorable performance in Little Miss Sunshine, but I wonder if there's an element of it being a lifetime-achievement-award.

That actually was the "story / rumor" around that time. Eddie was doing well going into that award season. He won the SAG Award, Golden Globe, Critics Choice, & was nominated.

Norbit being released in January (and the response to it), was widely circulated as being the reason he lost. Eddie was a (likable) Hollywood star for 3 decades...this was his first nomination, so I got the feeling that goodwill, along with a fairly strong performance in Dreamgirls, would get him the win. The Norbit came out.

I'm not if Norbit deserves 100% of the blame, but I definitely think it did not help his case.

I do remember people saying a similar thing about Eddie Redmayne in Jupiter Ascending but he still won.
