I don't know if it's the correct subreddit to ask that question but which adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is the best to watch (story wise)? I have to read multiple books for university and the only one I haven't read yet is Pride and Prejudice. The thing is, --and I'm very sorry Jane Austen fans-- I don't like the way Jane Austen writes her novels. So I was hoping to watch a movie instead. I heard there is a movie from 2005 and a short series from 1995. So which one is the closest to the novel?

You need to get your head out of your ass, madam.

Just to expand this answer a little.

I had to read Pride and Prejudice at school when I was 14. We had to write a summary of every chapter. There were 61 chapters! I found it really difficult at first, I wasn't in top set for English, probably have dyslexia/add/autism, but after a while I really got into it, and loved it. Still 35 years later one of the best books I've ever read.

You're at university. You can cope. Grow up and do the work.

If it was going to be something really that important for this class I would. But it's not. Also, English isn't my first language so it's more difficult. Reading stories with this kind of setting in my first language was tedious enough. But reading it in a foreign language and it being twice or three times longer, all of that for a minor class? Sorry but I have enough work already. Anyways I understand what you're saying but I know I'll take forever to read it and it's not really worth it this time.

Okay. Apologies, I'm sure you know your priorities better than I do. Good luck with your studies!

Thank you! I understand where you're coming from tho. I know that watching a movie instead of reading the book gives some "lazy kid" vibes but I really don't have the time for this.

I'm sorry :( But to be fair, other than the writing (Which isn't bad, I just don't like it) I think the thing that puts me off the most is the setting. It's just not the kind of story I like to read.

The zombie adaptation for sure...

Yup, it's probably the closest to the novel! (I didn't even know it existed lol, what IS this)

Occasionally Hollywood runs out of ideas and decides to randomly drop zombies into a movie.

Hollywood isnt that original. "Pride And Prejudice And Zombies" was a bestselling book before it became a movie.

Sense And Sensibility And Sea Monsters is better.

Both are good, but you are obviously going to get more of the book in the series, just due to the time they have to expand on things

Yeah but we aren't going to study it. We really just have to know the general story and understand it (since it's in a foreign language).

You should try the audiobook - Rosamund Pike reads it and does a great job

There should be plenty of digested texts in the internet? Read those - it‘s far quicker than watching a dilm for 1.5 hours.

The 1995 is probably the closest but it really depends on why you are reading it and what you are studying. It's not a difficult book. If there are minor differences between the show and the book, and you mention them somehow, you can bet your lecturer will spot it. For e.g. I watched, and really enjoyed the recent Emma adaptation, but I'm pretty sure they changed the dynamic of Emma's sister and her husband.

I remember suffering through a number classic French novels (not my first language). I barely remember them but it was really worth it in terms of improving my reading and writing.

It's more of a global comprehension of the book. We won't go into details, that's one of the reasons I allow myself to watch an adaptation. Tbh even if reading in English (a foreign language for me) is more difficult, I enjoy some classic English literature. It's just that Jane Austen is one of the author I can't fully appreciate.

1995 mini series, it’s among the best and most accurate book adaptations I have ever seen. The 2005 movie is fine and a really good watch, but its much shorter and makes changes to make it more of a romance movie (less societal commentary) and is not nearly as historically accurate.

That's the one I'll watch. Historical inaccuracies always put me off.

I don't know anything about the novel, but I always liked the 2005 film. So you may want to check it out?

According to most people here, the 1995 is more accurate. If it turns out I really like the story I'll watch the 2005 film(it's usually not my kind of thing but who knows? Maybe It'll surprise me).
