What non-Christmas movie do you always associate with Christmas because that was when you first saw it?

For example, you first saw a particular non-Christmas movie on TV or in the theater around Christmas and now always associate it with that time of the year.

For me it's The Towering Inferno, first seen on TV on Christmas Eve many years ago and I've rewatched it a number of times since then (even bought the Blu-ray).

As an aside, it has quite a cast too: Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Fred Astaire, William Holden, Faye Dunaway, Richard Chamberlain, O.J. Simpson .....

The Lord of the Rings movies all came out in theaters in December, so usually I want to do a marathon of those around that time.

Same, but it used to annoy me when it was on 25 days of Christmas and the commercial just included the one seen where they are like “happy Christmas Harry, happy Christmas Ron”. Like, yeah, that makes it a Christmas movie. But I love it so yeah

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. It may not have been Christmas when it came out but growing up, it always just seemed to be on the TV at Christmas time and we always watched it.

The original Star Wars trilogy.

I think it was either on USA or TNT, but when I was a kid in the mid 90s Star Wars played on cable during the Christmas season. I don't think it was every year, but I distinctly remember at least one year when I was about 9 or 10 playing with some Robotix toys and watching Empire Strikes Back.

It's absolutely a core memory for me.

The Sound of Music sort of feels like a Christmas movie because My Favorite Things has been coopted into a Christmas song.

I think of Little Women as a Christmas movie.

Mary Poppins. When I was younger it would never be shown throughout the year then on Christmas Day BBC one would always show Mary Poppins around lunch time.

That movie came out in theaters in June 1993. I saw it then. I also saw it in a theater in January 1994. Now, if a movie doesn't make half-a-billion on opening weekend it's some kind of flop.

The Hateful Eight. It has snow in it but I don’t know what time of year it’s set but I first saw it around Christmas the year it came out so I always try and watch it then.

Planes Trains and Automobiles. I grew up in the UK and didn't know what Thanksgiving was. It also my 2nd favorite movie and number one comedy, however to preserve it's charm I now only allow myself to watch it in November.

Die Hard is technically the right answer despite the debate on whether it is or isn't a Christmas movie, but a movie that isn't based around Christmas that I associate with Christmas is Toy Story 2.

Catch me if you Can. Not a Christmas movie by any standards, but so many important moments in the movie take place at Christmas that it's juuuuust enought to put it in my brain. I usually watch it around this time of year for that reason.

The Sound of Music - I was all of 5yo and the tickets were a gift from my grandmother. Our family went - big theatre downtown Washington DC and we dressed up. A long time ago and I still remember how wonderful it was. Still love going to the movies christmas day, almost 60 years later.
