This is a bonkers thing to say.

Se7en is good bit if you venture outside Reddit and IMDb, it's just good. It is an extremely self-serious, one-note movie that expresses itself mostly by being edgy. It is a peak refrigerator woman story: Paltrow's character is barely a character and is juet in the story to have her gruesome murder propell the story of the male protagonist. The story and themes get less coherent the more you think about them.

I still like it, it's just insanely overrated by dudes on internet boards

I think as soon as people move away from popular pap, to popular crafted cinema they think it's the greatest thing they've ever seen (it quite possibly is!), even though in world/historic terms it's still pretty tame/derivative/commercial.

This is one of those movies I’d describe as… clever. It’s a clever concept. There are clever scenes. But I’ll admit I don’t really get the appeal beyond a first watch.

calling something edgy is not a critique. there is nothing wrong with being edgy, with pushing the envelope and taking things too far. thats the entire point of art. why are you so bothered by edginess? why do you need everything to be clean and neat and nice and soft?

Se7en is not edgy from a filmmaking perspective, it pushes no envelopes in terms of form, narrative, or even content really. It doesn't really engage with the violence in the movie, it just suggests. It gives flashes of convoluted violent scenarios, but with no interest in actually intimating the viewer with the violence -- it justs suggests it to try to impress the viewer with edgyness.

oh nah i'm not bothered by you calling seven edgy specifically i'm iffy on that movie myself. i just hate the use of the word edgy as a catch all descriptor or criticism in general.

people need to use more words to say what they mean because edginess is not inherently bad.
