You cant possibly make Ready Player One without a ton of cameos and callbacks.

I dont think subtlety works with that movie. Its a parody movie.

Well, the Weird Al Movie is based on a 10 year old internet sketch, so it probably should have some connection to internet entertainment, right?

Free Guy is probably the worst example of this

Thats the book though.

Who gets to determine what it SHOULD be if not the people making it?

Have you ever seen a Weird Al music video? They're all like that. The fact that the Weird movie is a parody of musician biopics is perfect. Although Madonna really did suggest "Like a Surgeon."

Don't really know anything about the Nic Cage movie, but my impression of the Weird Al movie was that it was going to a stylized over-the-top parody of the genre of biopics of music stars and not so much something like those awful reference-vomit "parodies" that they used to churn out (all the ones that came out after Scary Movie). As a lifelong fan of Al, I'm hoping for the best.

Mike Nelson, formerly of MST3K and currently of Rifftrax, has a podcast called 372 Pages We'll Never Get Back, where the premise that they read the literary equivalent of the bad movies they'd do on MST3K and review them. The first book they did was Ready Player One, and, hoo boy, are you right. Whole point of the book just seems to be some boomer author listing off all the things he enjoyed when he was younger as if they were the be-all-end-all of pop culture.
