It's a plot device you see from time to time but it's not at all anything we haven't seen before.
The big, common example is >!the powder circle in witchcraft circles that provides protection and should never be broken!<

I definitely have seen it in other movies but I guess when the idea was given that once you are marked there is no escape from the cenobites, and then when I saw them get stopped by a metal gate I was a bit surprised.

I just imagine it's part of the design pattern that keeps them out. One of those things that never gets explained in depth because it wouldn't be a satisfying explanation if you got it.
