I’m just referring to iconic scenes, not necessarily whole films. Scenes like:

  • She steps from sepia into a world of colour
  • Apes go ape around a black monolith in prehistoric Africa; one thows a bone into the air and the camera follows it before smash-cutting to the future
  • The shower scene
  • Nails across a chalkboard
  • Descending on a rope into a white room where nothing must touch the floor or make a sound
  • The mug falls in slow motion toward a camera from below, and shatters; his gait transforms
  • "I am your father"
  • "You talkin' to me?"

Scenes so great or distinctive or memorable they get referenced and referred to again and again.

Do modern films still contain gems like these? What will be our references decades from now?

The entire ending of whiplash. I never felt the urge to give a film a standing ovation at home.

The problem is that with entertainment being so readily available and fragmented, it’s becoming rarer and rarer for anything to be truly, universally iconic.

Honestly, stuff like the MCU has the widest audience base and recognition across all demographics.

We”re never going to get much stuff like you’ve referenced outside of mega-franchises anymore.

Being caught in the gravity of a black hole and subsequently having to catch up on 23 years worth of video recordings where the father watches his daughter grow into a woman who resents him for leaving her.

All the while, tears streaming down his face because the emotions are so overwhelming for missing out on raising his child.

Feel like Thano’s first snap was the most memorable. People were shocked when a villain finally won.

Parasite will probably have a few scenes that go down in history. The entire storm sequence and the aftermath (like the scene of Ki-taek driving Mrs Park and overhearing her call the storm a "blessing in disguise") is probably going to be the most iconic imo

The scene is executed in a pretty standard way and isn’t particularly iconic, but it IS a SCENE and it is what kickstarts the franchise and it is what you first think of when you of John Wick which is undoubtedly iconic

Did you just throw Cube into a list of legendary movie moments with Taxi Driver and the rest? Or am I misremembering Indiana Jones or something else?

Either way, Cube rocks.

I feel like most of the truly memorable ones from the last 10 years are either TV, cinematic video games Marvel films.

Examples from TV:

"I am the danger! I am the one who knocks!"

"The Lannisters send their regards."

Examples from MCU:

"Hey big guy, the sun's getting real low."

"I'm with you til the end of the line."

"...oh God."

"I KNEW IT."

"I am Iron Man."

Examples from games:

"A man... chooses... a slave... obeys... OBEY!"

That moment from (og) Modern Warfare II. No, not No Russian, although also, No Russian. The Ghost moment. You know the one.

🎵 stand in front of a runaway train/just to feel alive again... 🎵

"LENNAAAAAAAYYYYYY"

The ending of Journey, maybe.

I know the question wasn't games or TV inclusive, but these moments are both cinematic and iconic, and they learnt that from movies.

If any of the scenes mentioned were iconic, you wouldn't have to name the movie when describing the scene.
