I’m just referring to iconic scenes, not necessarily whole films. Scenes like:
- She steps from sepia into a world of colour
- Apes go ape around a black monolith in prehistoric Africa; one thows a bone into the air and the camera follows it before smash-cutting to the future
- The shower scene
- Nails across a chalkboard
- Descending on a rope into a white room where nothing must touch the floor or make a sound
- The mug falls in slow motion toward a camera from below, and shatters; his gait transforms
- "I am your father"
- "You talkin' to me?"
Scenes so great or distinctive or memorable they get referenced and referred to again and again.
Do modern films still contain gems like these? What will be our references decades from now?
