For some odd reason it's become a Christmas movie --- I always see it on some basic cable channel in December

Because it's one of the most successful movies ever and also is kind of safe - bit of artful nudity and offscreen sex but otherwise a family-friendly romance/tragedy that gets eyeballs when nothing else is on.

I guess you're right --- it kinda replaced "Sound of Music" as a movie they always show around the holidays, but has nothing to do with Christmas
