So I'm here looking for recommendations to movies similar to these two. Preferably something within the last 20 years, that portrays tragic or upsetting real life events.

Blood diamond is one of my favorite movies as the lead actors did an amazing job, but also because of how great the entire movie is filmed.

Hotel Rwanda gets a spot simply because of how eye opening it is to the tragic events that took place within that country.

All reccoemndations are appreciated!!!!

Seems you’re into the Africa stories. Try Beasts of No Nation.

The Siege of Jadotville.

True story. African setting. Pretty tense. Very well done. It's got a bit of tragedy, just not "Hotel Rwanda" level tragedy.

Days of Glory is the English title of the film about Algerian French soldiers in WWII that is basically the French Saving Private Ryan.

However, the version I saw was in French and I'm not sure if they made it with English dubs or not.

The Killing Fields? I think it won a few awards.

'Beasts of No Nation' (2016) should be right up your alley. Harrowing stuff.

I know it's set in an older time, but The Pianst is one of the most haunting portrayals of World War II and the Nazi occupation of Poland I've ever seen. Despite the fact its director has a seat reserved for them in Hell.

First They Killed My Father is a good one we recently watched. It's not an African story though, but about the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia so it's more akin to The Killing Fields.

This one isn't a movie, but Black Earth Rising was a pretty good miniseries that covered the aftershocks that the Rwandan Genocide created decades on.
