I think it's a bad take to interpret those box office results as having anything to do with the content of the movie.

Those box office results are what you get when you teach your audience that they'll get the movie with their Disney+ subscription. Families have been taught by Soul, Luca, Turning Red, and the rest, that they've already bought this movie when they subscribed to Disney+. What family is going to go take the whole family to see Strange World on opening day, but isn't going to count themselves among the 221million Disney+ subscribers? I really struggle to imagine that family.

Box office results are this super simple and clear metric of success, so I can see why everyone wants to keep evaluating movies based on that. The box office sales of Encanto were some indication that disney fans would go back to theaters. But Disney+ subscriptions have doubled since Encanto came out. It's bigger than Netflix.

I think we're entering an era where box office results simply won't tell the story of whether a movie is a success or failure.

Tragic too — Soul and Turning Red not getting a theatrical release, as two of the most amazing a animated films I’ve ever enjoyed, urgh heartbroken

I was fortunate enough to see Turning Red on a Disney cruise. Wow it is so beautiful!

I agree it was delightful, and I think it’s messages felt more genuine than many other Disney movies.

I’m surprised so many people dislike it and that Disney has barely marketed it.

I suspect children who wish to grow up into the people who produce mandatory HR videos really enjoyed this movie.

I respectfully disagree with OP and 1st responders post.

The movie dragged. "messages" were heavy handed, they went on too long and in meaningless ways.

Not a single child in a 150 seat matinee ever laughed.

No adults laughed or reacted.

Only thing I liked about it was the computer work done.

I don't know how many people and how many hours of computer time was spent on this.... just that it was wasted in terms of a lasting legacy
