It's a dumb meme that ignores that Kevin is also only 7 years old *and* that he attempted to avoid the entire confrontation multiple times by trying to convince both Harry and Marv that he was not, in fact, home alone. On the first night, he runs around, turning on the lights, to convince them that someone is still in the house. On the second night, he stages a party to make them think people are home. It's only when they come back a third time that he resorts to physical confrontation, fighting back.

Also, you know... it's a movie.

I recently rewatched one and two. And Kevin is spoken about as a bad kid but he never did anything wrong. His family is horrible though. Also as a kid how do you know how affective a brick to the head is? He give them multiple chances to give up but they keep coming. Its on them.

Absolutely, they had multiple chances to give up, yet time and time again they only showed that they were thirsty for more.

I refuse to be one of these people who invests this much thought into a John Hughes film.

Fair point but if people didn’t put serious thought into mundane and pointless things Reddit (and most of the internet tbh) wouldn’t exist

Are these not also examples from Home Alone 2: Lost In New York? In which case, he would want to increase measures since they were resilient to his defenses the previous year. In fact, they even caught up to him and he was gonna get his fingers bitten off one by one until the old man saved him. Then he sees these guys a year later in a different city and knew what they were capable of and also realized he needed to up the ante.

I want someone to power scale the Old Man, dude had enough strength to do what 4 bricks at nearly terminal velocity, a couple dozen paint cans, a swinging metal pipe, an entire tool dresser, and a fuckin' blowtorch with one shovel swing.

I don't think he created all those booby traps with the intention of using each and every one. Realistically if I was shot with a bb gun, beaned with a paint can or electrocuted, I would cut my losses and move on to any number of truly empty houses rather than waste my energy and risk getting caught.

Cartoon physics. Similar rules. That's all. Reading more into the show is as useless as applying logic to Bugs Bunny. It reminds me of the Road Runner Laws & Rules. The most applicable rule is #3, "The Coyote could stop anytime — if he were not a fanatic. (Repeat: 'A fanatic is one who redoubles his effort when he's has forgotten his aim.' — George Santayana)."

Marv and Harry could've quit at anytime.

If they live in a cartoon universe, then Kevin's actions are as sane as the Road Runner and Bugs Bunny. He's not crazy, Marv and Harry are.

Cartoon universe also explains the utter lack of concern by nearly everyone else involved — the police, the airline, most of the family.

After so many efforts to avoid the fight with Marv and Harry, I can almost hear Kevin say, "Of course you realize, this means war!"

BTW, Marv and Harry are the real stars of the show and dominate the last third of the runtime. My family absolutely loves the last act of Home Alone 2.

"That was the sound of a tool chest, falling down the stairs."

Reasonable criminals would have just went and robbed a different house.

Had this thought the other day. Kevin is totally a brilliant manipulative sociopath. He planned to have the burglars chase him to the neighbors house. But why? Well, if he kept them at his house, and they were apprehended there, then there would be evidence of his booby traps and the wet bandits could have made a personal injury claim against the McAlister’s homeowners insurance. Brilliant job on Kevin luring them away.

(I work in a personal injury law firm and had this thought while sitting in traffic)

This movie actually takes place in the Marvel Universe, Harry and Marv have superhuman durability and Kev is trying to cause enough damage to harm them

The definition of a sociopath is a lack of empathy. A child, by nature, is a sociopath.

I love these posts that start off with something like “everyone agrees that Sesame Street is just Marxist garbage masquerading as children’s entertainment..”

Like… who is “everyone” calling Kevin a sociopath?

Why does Harry not just offer to housesit after the family leaves and let Marv in? They seem to trust him.

I got another Home Alone related question which I think is important...
How did Kevin order pizza if the phones were out?

Samael13 t1_j2ayflr wrote

The phones were out when the family left, but were repaired by the time he orders a pizza. The repair guy says they were "a mess" so it can explain the family's inability to get through to Kevin, but they could have been up long enough for him to call for pizza and, later, the police.

Abbott & Costello Laurel & Hardy Etc

I’m not a fan of violence either, especially when it’s presented as comedy. It’s quite horrifying to teach an entire generation how to abuse anyone or anything living and pretend it’s normal and acceptable.
