This was the first and only film that Coppola made with his own studio that aimed at giving decent schedules and conditions to cast and crew. They gambled it all on this one movie to succeed and show the industry great movies could be made in a more humane way. And it did get some good critiques but in the end it cost so much and made back so little Coppola was paying his debt for the next 10 years or so.

The thing is, the movie never got a proper theatrical release. It was given a week of limited distribution to see how it would do and then it got shelved. So it never stood a chance.
