The whole point of movies is unlikely or unusual circumstances. Otherwise they'd be really short and dull.

it's one of my least favorite tropes, as well-- the "too smart for their own good" teenager.

like most tropes, there is a kernel of truth, but they ramp it up to 11 because they believe the average moviegoer is a dummy. lol

It gets so repetitive in that movie. In a movie full of overdone tropes they still couldn’t find a way to move the story forward so they use the kids not listening like 8 times.

Repeat every 15 minutes for 3 hours.
