What are everyone's thoughts on this film? I only have one person I can talk to about cinema properly in my social circle, and everyone else doesn't understand why Ryan Reynolds isn't "being funny".

I personally love both the dark humour and the attempt to relate to a truly mentally unwell psychopath's perspective as he not only tries to do what's right but then comes crashing down from it like a meteor through a path of dominoes. I honestly think Reynolds nailed it, and the entire supporting cast is so complimentary by playing the "main characters" in the background while we watch a man struggle to fit in with his peers.

Anyway, thoughts?

It’s rare to find a serial killer film that truly gets into the head of the killer and in this case, Ryan Reynolds gives an amazing performance as a deeply mentally ill individual who somehow remains charming till the end. This is a dark and twisted comedy that deserved a better release.

Loved the movie when I saw it years ago and want to rewatch sometime soon. I liked how it ends with a song and dance number, just like American Psycho was supposed to at one point, felt like they took inspiration from that.

I thought it was great. It not often Ryan Reynolds gets to flex his "dramatic chops", (Amittyville, Smoking Aces, this one,) but he really really killed it (no pun intended) in this one. It was whimsical and stark, and i do love dramatic tone shifts, but he wasnt the only great thing about this movie. Well written, well filmed, well edited, a really solid movie anyone who loves dark comedy, movies about unreliable narrators, or just bleak tone.

I think you could try the search function. There's a few threads, some with more "in depth analysis" than yours even.

Don't love to be an asshole about it but there's little discussion to be had here if your conversation starter is just a simple paragraph that merely describes the movie, even though I know that's what this subreddit is known for (and what it rewards).

Just my two unwarranted cents.

If you'd like to talk film, have you seen any of the other films by the director? They vary wildly and I find it hard to sense her as an auteur, even though she's profoundly talented.
