Submitted by TheRealClose t3_zyh5at in movies

Edit: I am hugely embarrassed, I just did a recount and realised I missed one. Total is actually 90 films!

At the beginning of 2019 I made a resolution to see at least 30 new films in a cinema. I blasted past that and saw 52 films, also saw 52 in 2020. Unfortunately much more severe lockdowns in 2021 lead to only seeing 42 films, however I bounced back this year seeing 90 in total, 36 just at the NZ International Film Festival.

My favourites that I saw this year are:

  • Playground
  • All Quiet on the Western Front
  • Triangle of Sadness
  • Return to Seoul
  • Marcel the Shell With Shoes On
  • Spencer
  • The Banshees of Inisherin
  • White Noise
  • Bodies Bodies Bodies
  • Full Time
  • The Innocents
  • The Worst Person In the World
  • Everything Everywhere All At Once
  • The Menu

I think a few of these will be strong contenders for Oscars. Really hoping All Quiet can get a Best Picture nomination.

Honourable mentions to Top Gun Maverick, Smoking Causes Coughing, and Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva, which aren’t quite good enough to be at the top of my list, but undoubtedly are some of my favourite cinema experiences this year.

I don’t want to overload this post with text so in the comments I’ll leave a link to my Letterboxd list which has a full ranking of all the films I saw, and you can click through to the reviews to read my thoughts on each - (except Banshees, which I found so impactful I literally couldn’t put it into words).

How many films did you guys see in cinemas this year, and what are your top picks?

I have seen a grand total of zero, zilch, nada, nil this year. I gotta start going alone again!

Do it! Imo seeing movies alone is much more rewarding.

DrabDonut t1_j268ugz wrote

> seeing movies alone is much more rewarding

Yeah, that’s why I watch them at home.

5

TheRealClose OP t1_j26dvkx wrote

I should have added in a theatre.

It’s still rewarding at home, but I find my mind is far too easily distracted when I’m at home. The cinema helps me focus.

RiffRafe2 t1_j25v7yy wrote

It's probably a bit more but I have definitely seen 46 films in the theater this year.

Nice! What are you favourites?

My most recent favorites this year have been -

BABYLON

THE MENU

WOMEN TALKING

EMPIRE OF LIGHT

THE BATMAN

ELVIS

TILL

THE OUTFIT

AVATAR THE WAY OF WATER

BANSHEES OF INISHERIN

4

Compass_Needle t1_j25wdcn wrote

Taking into account new releases and reruns of classic movies, I'd say a grand total of zero.

4

blucthulhu t1_j26804z wrote

Something like 45-50. I try to go every week.

Elvis, Triangle of Sadness, and The Banshees of Inisherin were my favorites.

TheCookieButter t1_j28ekie wrote

52, though I wasn't home to go cinema for half the year, and sadly my local doesn't play as wide a variety as I'd hope for blockbuster or indie.

Most notable (in order watched):

  • Boiling Point
  • Ali & Ava
  • Top Gun: Maverick
  • The Menu
  • After Sun

Worst: Jurassic World probably.

CorgiGal89 t1_j293ppc wrote

Watching Jurassic World right after watching Top Gun was just a punch in the gut. From sequel done well to sequel done horribly.

TheRealClose OP t1_j2a9jb2 wrote

Ali & Ava was great. Glad to see someone else talking about it.

Let me know if you strongly agree or disagree. I’m happy that the vast majority of films I saw this year I enjoyed.

I think I’ve seen 3 movies in the theater this year: Anything Goes (Fathom Event musical), Love Actually (re-release) and Glass Onion.

Knives Out was the last film I saw in theaters before COVID so that felt right to see Glass Onion the same way.

At a guess, somewhere around $900-1200, minus a tax rebate.

I don’t remember the last time I saw a movie in theaters. Maybe like five or six years ago I saw one movie in theaters. Don’t recall what it was.

One (Maverick), shortly to be Two (Avatar).

In total I've watched close to 100 films this year as its my job.
I don't think you and I have similar tastes.

What do you do, and what were your favourites that aren’t on my list?

2

marklondon66 t1_j29i6qm wrote

I'm in the film industry, mainly advising film finance and distribution entities these days, usually independent films from $2-$40M budget. I occasionally work with larger studios on P&A deals. I watch at least 3 films a week for most of the year, so I've probably seen over 100 in 2022. One that stood out for me was 'EO' a wonderful Polish film starring a donkey.

I truly truly hated 'Maverick' ; a soulless piece of inane propaganda, as much for Boomer values as for the military, and I generally like slick action films. I felt nothing but rage after it.

TheRealClose OP t1_j2aas7b wrote

I really wasn’t expecting to like Maverick as I hated the first Top Gun, but was really surprised by how captivating it was.

I have heard of EO and will definitely check it out if it plays locally.

44 movies in theater for me, no regrets.

Wish I still lived near an ADH, that amount probably would have been 1.5x if I still did.

Nice. I don’t usually regret going to the movies, even if it’s really bad. I still consider it a valuable experience.

I thoroughly disliked Jurassic World.

Shoutout AMC A-List, I got to see ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Jaws’ in theaters for the first time and I’ll never forget those experiences.

I saw top gun, nope (they were both playing at same theatre so did a double header type thing) … eh… I dont even remember what else.. marvel movies I guess thor and dr.strange. That about it.

Here’s the thing.. I could have just waited for them to be on streaming. Topgun was fun, nope was interesting, marvel was forgettable. None I felt were mush see theatre fare.. I struggle to find the “wow” factor anymore in film. Idk, if its just me but something just feels “different”.

2

TheRealClose OP t1_j2ab82u wrote

Weird, I can’t imagine not being enthralled by your theatre experience of Top Gun, unless it was a pretty cheap small theatre? That film for me absolutely makes best use of the cinema experience.

1

SmoothBrainSavant t1_j2afgv6 wrote

I think over the pandemic I’ve kept up with “movie news” too much, where the expectations get blown out of the water and am left underwhelmed. I also seem to only go to the movies when I’m depressed.. hmm yeah, that could be it.
