For the two previous decades prior to 2000 the best years for Summer Movies seem to be unanimous. For the 80’s and 90’s 1982 and 1997 are most people’s favorite Summer Movie Lineup from what I gather. However, what is the definitive answer for the early 2000’s?

Personally, my answer is 2002. The lineup is as follows: Spider-Man, Unfaithful, Bourne Identity, Minority Report, Road To Perdition, Signs, Star Wars Episode 2, Insomnia, Men in Black 2, Austin Powers in Goldmember, Lilo & Stitch, Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, Spy Kids 2, The Powerpuff Girls Movie, Hey Arnold The Movie, Halloween Ressurection, Stuart Little 2, and Scooby-Doo

Obviously there are some choices in there that aren’t good, like any summer, but I think there are some great films that came out during that time. What’s the Summer movie season of that decade that resonated the most with you?

2008

TDK, Wall E, Iron Man, Tropic Thunder, Stepbrothers, Hellboy 2, Pineapple Express, Speed Racer, The Strangers, a new Indiana Jones (yeah it was bad but still the anticipation was obviously insane for the first one after nearly 20 years), Kung Fu Panda, Wanted, the Incredible Hulk, Mamma Mia

A lot of fantastic films across all genres and something for everyone

I remember sneaking Quiznos Subs and Arizona Ice Tea cans into the theatre for a double feature of Wanted and Pineapple Express.

It was so hard choosing between this one and 2002. This Summer season was fantastic, I’m one of the 10 people that even enjoyed Indiana Jones. But to get all these great movies and then the event that was The Dark Knight was just incredible.

2008 is clearly the answer. The Dark Knight hype trumps anything besides Phantom Menace which came out before your timeline.

I still gotta go wit the Summer of 2002, but I’m fine with 2008 being the consensus.

Although I did want to say that I would argue the hype for Spider-Man in 2002 was just as big as it was for The Dark Knight.

I’m going to make a case for 2004:

You had acclaimed blockbuster sequels with Spider-Man 2, Shrek 2, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and The Bourne Supremacy.

Some other acclaimed movies like Collateral, Napoleon Dynamite, Garden State, and Before Sunset.

Popular comedies Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story were released.

That’s 10 strong summer movies so far.

Even the not so well reviewed movies that summer seemed to entertain a variety of audiences over time or upon release like The Village, The Day After Tomorrow, I,Robot, The Notebook, Troy, Van Helsing, White Chicks, The Chronicles of Riddick, and Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.

Documentaries also had a very strong year. Fahrenheit 9/11 and Super Size Me. To this day the highest grossing documentary of all time is Fahrenheit 9/11 and Super Size Me gained a lot of attention, even making McDonald’s getting rid of the super size.

It was a very strong summer showing, movies with a lot of different audiences in mind.

2004 would definitely be in my top 3 for that decade. I even enjoyed a lot of the ones you listed that didn’t have critical acclaim. Van Helsing, I, Robot, and Harold and Kumar were a lot of fun at the time.

I didn’t know Collateral came out that Summer. For the most part it seems that August is a dead month for movie releases during Summer, but it is interesting that back then you had Collateral and Signs both coming out in August.

2005…Sin City, Batman Begins, Star Wars Ep III, War of the Worlds, Fantastic Four, King Kong, I was at the movies constantly that whole year not just summer. For some reason that year sticks out in my mind vividly compared to others.

I think King Kong was that Christmas, but yeah some solid movies came out during that time.

It’s weird to think about now but Batman Begins was somewhat of a sleeper hit.

No one in my 8th grade class except me and like two other students I barely knew were excited about it, no one else cared. Cut to three years later and EVERYONE in my school was hyped af for Dark Knight.

I saw Sin City in cinema at the age of 15 and it absolutely blew me away. One of the coolest movies ever.

07-09 was such a strong streak for summer movies. Hard to choose, but the summer of 08 when the MCU started and The Dark Knight released was truly something special

I’ll always have nostalgia for Summer 2007 because I was going to the movies almost every week. Though I know a lot of those big releases were considered to be disappointments by many, I still enjoy a good chunk of them. From the outset prior to seeing any of those films the lineup for that Summer was insane. There were so many franchise films coming out during that time.

I do think 2008 is THE answer to my question based on what I’m seeing in this thread.

Summer 2009 was a let down for me personally and I think it mostly had to do with being the writers strike that happened from 07-08. Star Trek, and District 9, Inglorious Bastards, and Hurt Locker were definitely the standout films of the season. I’m still sore over how bad Transformers 2 was. I was anticipating that to be the best blockbuster of the Summer.

I remember 2005.

Star Wars. Batman. Sin city. Mr and Mrs Smith. War of the worlds. I think 40 year old virgin too?

I wasn’t old enough to see Sin. Bought a ticket to House of Wax. Snuck into Sin City.

Sin City was in early April, but 40 Year Old Virgin was during August so that counts.

As far as big blockbusters go Batman, Star Wars, and War of the World’s were definite highlights. Didn’t see Fantastic Four and Mr and Mrs Smith until home video.
