Seven Psychopaths
Like Flight of the Phoenix? Sure.
Ah, a fellow middle of nowhere fan. I love this trope so much. I've sought out so many movies that take place in desolate deserts and shady small towns. I love the atmosphere of isolated places where nobody can be trusted.
Off the top of my head:
Red Rock West
Scenic Route
A Simple Plan
Revenge (2017)
Retroactive (1997)
Tremors
U-Turn
From Dusk Till Dawn
The Dark Backward
No Country For Old Men
The Quick and the Dead
The Music of Chance
Frailty
Rubin and Ed
Not all of these are fully set in deserts/small towns, but they have the same lonely atmosphere. Hope this helps!
i’ll check all of these out, thank you for the recommendations!
Why no good bad and ugly
Already listed in the OP.
Because if I added Westerns it would be a neverending list. I only added The Quick and the Dead because I love Sam Raimi.
Breakdown is also a pretty good 90s movie what that trope.
Yeah Breakdown is one of my favorites but it's already mentioned in the OP.
Have you checked out Arctic (2018) with Mads Mikkelsen? Sounds like you’d love it.
Tremors, I love that movie
Wolf Creek movies and series!
Yes this! Those Aussie outback vibes.
What about like Bagdad Cafe?
ooooo this looks like a good one!!
Try ‘Ice cold in Alex’. It’s old but good! The ending will have you dying for a cold Carlsberg
Walkabout.
The Rover (2014) starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson
Priscilla, Queen of the desert 1994. About a bus trapped in the Australian outback.
this looks good!! i’ll be watching it today, thank you
I love it and it horrifies me.
Trace?
Break Down was probably my favorite of the genre. It really did a great job of making you feel the desolation and hopelessness of the situation. It doesn’t end as strong as it starts, but that first 40 minutes really draws you in.
The Way Back.
No.
I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.
Rat Race!
Great trope for sure. If you’re interested in a fun spin on it then check out Sahara!
Does the movie “Paul” count?
Lol yep. Something about the desert makes for amazing cinematography. Paris, Texas is another one with a great desert trope (at least at the start.)
diani and devine meet the apocalypse
In grew up and live in Az, i want to see movies with rain in them =(
really?? interesting.. i’m on the east coast and the seasons bug me, feels like i can’t do anything for 4 months (nov-feb/march) bc it’s so cold! although fall is beautiful, but the summers are HUMID. went to NV and it was hot but there was no humidity, felt amazing.
Low humidity is amazing, but having no visible seasons sucks, and it not raining for 4 months at a time and the constant never ending sun sun sun just sucks the soul out of me.
Honestly when it rains i feel like I'm on vacation since i can't be at home. so moving to a cold rainy place would be so cozy.
Near Dark
The Passenger (1975)
Gold
Mystery Road
You'll probably enjoy Collision (2013), which is a thriller about a tourist couple on a deadly misadventure set in the Moroccan desert.
The X-Men movie Logan kind of had this vibe.
Ever seen World’s Fastest Indian? It invokes Anthony Hopkins driving his motorcycle into the desert and racing it on salt flats.
Not a single Wake In Fright mention? It's the sweatiest film I've ever seen
From a science fiction perspective there's Them! (1954) and It Came from Outer Space (1953). There are episodes of the original Twilight Zone and Outer Limits like that too.
If you want something a bit different, take a look at The Flight of the Phoenix (1965). It's about a group of people who are stranded in a desert when their plane goes down. It stars James Stewart.
Then there's films like Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Sahara (1943) and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) both with Humphrey Bogart, The Lost Patrol (1934) with Karloff in a minor role, The Walking Hills (1949).
The Bad Batch (2016)
Palm Springs (2020)
Deathproof (2007)
Kalifornia (1993)
Future World (2018)
The Book of Eli (2010)
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) (all Mad Max movies)
Sicario (2014)
Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)
Hell or High Water (2016)
A Night in Old Mexico (2013)
The Lone Ranger (2013)
Tremors (1990)
Holes (2003)
Tank Girl (1995)
Young Ones (2014)
The Rover (2014)
Everybody loves Kangaroo Jack!
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Fall 2022 counts.
