People who talk in theatre are just piece of shit

TheyHitMeWithaTruck t1_j66ipu9 wrote

This. I don't care about their taste in movies, I just want them to shut the fuck up.

One of the reasons I usually go to Alamo Drafthouse, where they will throw your ass out for talking.

I thought it was really good and liked it a lot, very funny and unique, but I also do not think it’s the masterpiece that many on here seem to.

I enjoyed it but it was nothing special.

Conscious_Bee8827 t1_j66sqdf wrote

That's an almost irredeemable take? Everyone has their own tastes and it's absolutely valid to have not liked it, but if it's anything, it's: a movie, unique, and special.

ColdPressedSteak t1_j66gk03 wrote

I think it was more than really good, maybe not quite masterpiece but pretty close

But I also understand how the film can be a bit polarizing and that some people just don't connect with it and so can see why some people don't understand the praise

I think the hype of this movie has oversold it with some people. I saw it early on and was blown away, but for people who’ve been told it’s the best movie ever for months I can see how it doesn’t live up.

poolaka t1_j68fkv6 wrote

This, 100%. I had this exact experience with The Dark Knight. Everyone was telling me it was the greatest, etc. I didn't see it for a few weeks or so, and the hype built up more and more. When you walk into any event with such high expectations, it's almost impossible for those expectations to be met and you walk away left wanting.

I enjoyed The Dark Knight, but definitely felt a lack of satisfaction to some degree. I think I've actually enjoyed it more in later viewings.

With EEAAO, I saw it fairly early in theaters and enjoyed it immensely. I walked out with a Mitch higher level of satisfaction than I did with TDK

Is the topic “I overheard a stranger say they didn’t like a movie” really going to foster meaningful discussion of a movie that’s been talked to death for 9 months?

paulwhitedotnyc t1_j66ccpm wrote

Audiences either buy in to the universe, suspend their disbelief and enjoy it for what it is, or they don’t and it gets increasingly more ridiculous, confusing and ultimately boring.

I can understand doing either and felt on the fence the whole time.

I saw at theatres twice. First time when it came out, I thought it was fine. Nothing special, felt like an extended YouTube short. Then over the months people are hailing this movie as this masterpiece so I went to see it again two weeks ago. Still fine, but nothing special.

I know people who hated it. It’s just not for everybody.

baudinl t1_j66k90m wrote

I couldn't stand this movie and had to turn it off during the dildo fight. Being an Asian American immigrant, it should have been right up my wheelhouse, but I found it overbearing and exhausting almost immediately. It's trying way too hard to be edgy and clever. Most of the themes were explored way more effectively in movies like "The Farewell".

Having said that, anyone who talks in a theater during a movie is an insufferable POS.

9

catcodex t1_j672b4a wrote

>Most of the themes...

You didn't even bother to watch the bulk of the movie. So please don't tell us what the themes were.

−1

baudinl t1_j6754q8 wrote

Pretty sure most of the themes were revealed in the first part of the movie... that's generally how things work. Inter-generational conflict, Asian-American identity, belonging, scraping by... my family lived through all these things.

Why are people so personally offended when someone has a differing opinion on a movie? If you enjoyed it, great, I'm happy for you. Move on.

I'm not gonna lie, I began to lose interest in the movie around that scene as well. I thought it was an interesting movie, but not awful or anything like that. I think the thing we should be talking how awful it is when people talk through movies.

I definitely have talked a moment here and there in my entire movie going experience but mostly just give out looks to whoever I'm with. Lately I have had experiences when people talk during the movie and I kid you not...the time I watched Everything, Everywhere was when thr new Dr Strange movie came out and thr couple next to us kept talking about how much better this movie was than Dr. Stranger.

Maybe its the area I live in but this happens at every screening I go to. Peoppe having full on conversations.

I feel you, I just wait 2-3 weeks when the movie releases and either go late at night or early in the day with little to no people there .

Mechanicallvlan t1_j66hw2w wrote

That wasn't necessary for me with EEAAO; I watched this on opening night, and there was only one other person in the theater.

DreamDull1192 t1_j66dmqg wrote

It was a good movie. Totally overrated. Thought Jamie lee Curtis was great. 2nd half of the movie I was waiting for Dr. Strange to appear. I enjoyed Ambulance more.

My sister and I watched it at our little town's local hall. It was the middle of winter (I'm in Australia) and the hall heating wasn't working.

We were rugged up with blankets in bean bags but sitting there for as long as we were, the cold still crept in. Yet I still enjoyed it.

I just couldn’t get into it. I tried but it just seemed too over the top for me. I turned it off after maybe 40 minutes. I might try to watch it again one day. I definitely wouldn’t say it’s a bad movie, just not for me.

SeagullsStopItNowz t1_j66amqg wrote

I don’t get the division this movie seems to illicit. This movie is fantastic! Sure, maybe the humor isn’t to everyone’s taste, but is that it? What makes the haters not like it and call it the worst movie ever made, I wonder.

1

RyzenRaider t1_j66g2cm wrote

It's also pretty zany and seemingly random at times. Some people just don't want that in their movies. Some just want easy to digest entertainment, and this movie does get pretty densely packed, requiring concentration to digest it. My parents didn't like it.

I loved it for the very reasons they didn't.

So I get the reaction, even I think they're missing out on so much of the film as a result. In fact, I don't personally know anyone that liked EEAaO, which is also true for The Batman. It's weird, because I used to share a lot of common favorite movies with friends and family, and then a fairly sudden divergence across genres.

I thought cloud atlas was amazing and prob place it in my top 5,yet to find a person who thinks its was better than mediocre.

Things go on a spectrum, you really really like this film, something about it just clicks in a way that compelled you to watch it 3 times. Your going to find people who aggressively hate it and all the flavours between you and them

Most people will be somewhere in the middle.

I personally think juno is the best film ever made and could go on for hours how it's the best example of the human Condition put to film, I thought inception was really boring. Different strokes for different folks.

Should probably give everything, everywhere all at once a go. Think I'll vibe it?

I've heard mixed messages about this one. It's another Wachowski film, yes? If it's what I'm thinking of, sounds like Wachowskis being Wachowskis. Bit of a pass for me, although I enjoy the Hans Zimmer soundtrack.

2

Helloscottykitty t1_j66tw4y wrote

Yeah it's a Wachowski film. I'd say I understand how people can say it can be jarring has a interconnected anthology narrative but I will still say it is a spectical movie and you watch it in a similar way to Space oddesy 2001.

It's also nothing like jupiter, which was a disappointment.

sofewcharacters t1_j66wyqr wrote

Yeah, see, I was bored shitless watching 2001, even with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performing the score. I just didn't get it.

I thought it was funny and create but it didn’t resonate with me like it did with some people I know. I don’t even think it’s in my top 15 of all time, despite it being well-written.

Even though nothing about movies is objective, I feel like you can almost objectively say it’s a creative/resourceful movie, especially on it’s budget. But 11 nominations? nahhh

DolphinPunchShark t1_j66e9y7 wrote

I’m probably gonna watch this tonight. But this reminds me of seeing Fury Road weekend opening When the lights came on, I heard some guy exclaim “I’d give that…4 thumbs down!”. He even kinda sounded like Comic Book Guy, but he was serious

1

txcueball t1_j66y1lh wrote

I saw it. Didn't really like it. Wasn't the worst movie I've seen but in the bottom tier for me. But that's why they make different movies for different people. I don't have to like it and other people don't have to like what I do.

But shut your damn mouth in the theater. If you hate it, then shut up and leave so someone that's into it can enjoy it. Don't be so selfish and thoughtless. Cant stand people that talk during movies or live performances.

I loved it. Mainly because it focused on concepts that I’m interested in and the fundamental issue with how to deal with nihilism as a major life problem if the multiverse is a place where everything happens.

I thought it was shoddily paced & overwritten Marvel fan fiction crossed with a shitty Lifetime movie. Plenty of potential in the concept and the characters, but the execution was all off.

bigorangeduck t1_j66g959 wrote

The movie was amazing, but this illustrates why it’s a dark horse for a Best Picture win. I guessing there are a lot members in the Academy who may feel same as these ladies. Also, the Academy seems to really like movies about movies, making movies, Hollywood, or “stardom”. Thats why like films Argo, The Artist, Judy, have an edge to win AA’s. I was truly shocked when Moonlight beat La La Land for BP. I’m predicting The Fabelmans BP win even though I haven’t seen it.

0

cthd33 t1_j66liqg wrote

It is no longer a dark horse (if it was ever). It is currently the frontrunner to win BP.

kleptophobiac t1_j66kjrt wrote

EEAAO is, at its heart, a John Cassavetes movie about a family in crisis, and it is weakened by the multiverse element. I have seen it twice, and I respect its craft, but I got almost nothing at all from it emotionally.

Did I like the movie? Yes! Is it the greatest thing ever since sliced bread? No. Do I love Waymond? Yes! Did I care for the daughter? Ehhh. Was Michelle Yeoh awesome? Yup. Was the rock scene whatever? Yes. Did I cry? Not really. Did I laugh? Often times I did. Did I see it more than once? I saw it once and it was enough. Do I get why some people didn't like it? Absolutely.

Point of all this? Let people feel the way they feel about it. I'm fine if people hated the movie.

I hate plebs too. That's why I don't even bother going to theaters anymore. Knowing that I'm in a room full of people who don't know an ounce as much about cinema as I do disgusts me. Fortunately I have my own "theater room" so I don't need to.
