In The Bedroom (2001) is an emotionally searing grieving parent story, where the father seeks revenge.

Sweet Hereafter (1997) is about a whole town grieving a school bus crash.

I was going to mention In the Bedroom. This was very well received by the critics and is a great Indie film.
