Princess Mononoke was the film that made me fall head over heels for cinema in general. Artistry in storytelling, with one of my favorite antagonists in any medium.
The Iron Giant was one of the first movies I saw theatrically, and the final set-piece still activates my tear ducts to this day.
Son of the White Mare is one of the central touchstones of abstraction and consolidated story and character ethos in the history of the medium. Blew my mind when I finally caught up with it, as clearly it has influenced dozens of animators since, especially Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Primal).
Honorable mention #1- Fantasia 2000, specifically the Firebird Suite sequence, which remains the single greatest thing the mouse factory, and western animation as a whole, has produced in their entire output, you cannot change my mind.
HM#2- Interstella 5555, The official feature length Daft Punk AMV. It rules.
The Iron Giant is one of my favorites. It's one of those rare movies where people can understand the theme, even if they don't agree with it.
Yellow Submarine. A Beatles classic.
The Incredibles. It just touches on superhero and spy movies at the same time.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Just a really beautiful work of art.
The Secret of NIMH
Akira
Fantasia
Spider-Man: Into the spider verse
Megamind, a town called panic, the boxtrolls. All have great story and funny.
Treasure planet
Song of the sea
Puss in boots last wish
These aren't my definitive top 3, just a few I really love :
Princess Mononoke - One of my favourite Ghibli movies. It's a gorgeous movie with brilliant storytelling and also a technical marvel for its time. The mix of CGI and 2D was phenomenal.
How to Train Your Dragon - Easily my favourite of the Dreamworks animation franchise, this entire trilogy is just beautiful and epic.
Wall-E - While I love almost all of Pixar's movies, there's really nothing that brings out my emotions quite as well as Wall E does. It's just beautiful film-making.
The Jungle Book (1967). Came out two years before I was born, loved it as a kid, still do.
Les Triplettes de Belleville (2003). If you’ve seen it, you will know why it is on this list.
An American Tail (1986). Brilliant.
The Secret of Kells
Soul
Fantasia
The Hobbit
Aladdin
Toy Story
The Incredibles
Spirited Away
Mulan
I guess those, idk.
Transformers The Animated Movie 1986
Akira 1988
Your Name 2016
Your Name Into the spider verse Kung fu panda
Paprika, Mononoke Hime, maybe Lilo and Stitch?
But my buckets are Satoshi Kon, Hayao Miyazaki, and then the giant bucket of Disney/Pixar
Not seeing much Studio Ghibli in here, so I shall take my leave, good luck everyone :D
Grave of the Fireflies - brilliant film that is worthy of historical preservation and will leave you devastated.
5 Centimeters Per Second - amazing film about growing older and the passing of time
Akira - it's just a brilliant mind bending movie, with visuals and storytelling unlike anything out there
Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse
Wall-E
Coraline
Into the Spider-Verse
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
Mortal Kombat: Scorpion's Revenge
But ask me later and those last two could change.
Coco and Soul
Spiderverse
Ratatouille
Kung fu Panda
In that order likely
Fantasia....Lord of the Rings....Watership Down...Yellow Submarine..can't stop at 3
Aladdin - My favorite Disney film with a stellar score and amazing cinematic-style animation
Beauty and the Beast- nominated for best picture and rightly so. Just an excellent piece of cinema.
Finding Nemo - to date still Pixar's greatest masterpiece. Hilarious, touching, and beautiful, all in one go.
grave of the fireflies, ice age, up, wall-e
Lord of the Rings Great Mouse Detective Into the Spider-Verse
Heavy metal.
South Park BL&U
Fantasia (on weed)
Ghost in the Shell.
Animatrix.
Waking life.
South Park : Bigger, Longer, & Uncut
Heavy Metal
To Your Last Death
Up (the first five minutes)
Totoro Iron Giant Spider Verse
Emperors New Groove
Prince of Egypt
Mulan
Sleeping Beauty
Akira
The Iron Giant
Spirited Away, Beavis and Butthead Do America, Lion King
Ratatouille
The Sword in the Stone. Wizards. Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Off the top of my head...
Spider-Verse
Spirited Away
The Incredibles
Zootopia's really good but for animated movies, there's got to be some anime up top
Princess Mononoke or Akira for wildly different reasons
Personally, End of Evangelion is a total work of art, but takes some getting to
Coco
Onward
Aladin
Angel's Egg, The Tragedy of Man and Mad God might very well be my top 3 movies period. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya and The Wolf House also come in close.
Zootopia Inside Out Madagascar (first animation movie in my life) Despite Madagascar, it gotta be Isle of Dogs
Lion king Aladdin Toy Story 3

This thread is very telling of people’s age lmao.
For me it’d be:
The incredibles
Kung Fu Panda
Wall-E
I know there are some older ones that likely one-up these but I’ve seen what I’ve seen.
The Iron Giant. One of my favorite movies from my childhood.
Shrek 2. Basically the last good Shrek. Was bigger and better than Shrek 1 and also loved how it parodied pop culture. I also need to see Puss in Boots.
Wall-E. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love the message that it sends and the fact that it is a sci-fi movie helps. The first part of the movie on earth is really one of my favorite sequences in movie history. It conveys so much with barely any dialogue
Also honorable mention to Up. The only reason I'm mentioning it is because of the beginning montage where you see them live their whole life. I never knew you could pack a gut punch like that into a 3 minute scene.
I'm surprised not to see Fantastic Mr Fox nominated so far, unless I've skipped over it. I think it's fun and heartwarming in equal measure and visually beautiful too. It's one I really thought would enjoy univers acclaim.
Fantastic Mr Fox
Waltz With Bashir
Shrek
Pretty close and interchangeable with one another are Shrek 2, Monsters Inc. and Uni, Mulan and The Princess and the Frog.
The Incredibles...mom was hot!
Fritz the Cat.....all he wanted to do was get high and get laid.
Fantastic Mr. Fox.....not really animated but cool flick
Yellow Submarine....makes me want to get high.and the music is great!
Oh only three...
The Last Unicorn, for the story, the excellent voice acting, songs and general vibe.
Sleeping Beauty, for the artwork and the music and rad villain.
The Land Before Time, because who doesn't like dinosaurs? This was a family favorite when my kid sister was little, so we watched it a lot. To this day the beginning will make me cry.

Honorable mention: Rise of the Guardians and Violet Evergarden.
Tangled - wholesome and fun, peak Disney
Hercules (1997) - loved it since I was a kid, best songs ever, has me in tears every single rewatch
Girls und Panzer der Film - distilled insanity, nothing is quite like this one
Pinocchio
The Dark Crystal
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Golgo 13: The Professional
Heavy Metal
Animalympics

#1 by a wide margin, the true masterpiece - Akira
#2- Princess Mononoke
#3- Into the Spiderverse
How many animated films have you seen in total?
How is Zootopia higher than things like Watership Down and Fantasia?
Top 3..... favorite maybe? You can't decide someone else's top movies lol
Eh, nostalgia is a powerful thing. 'Titan A.E.' is one of my favorites and that's objectively a pretty flawed film.
Who said anything about nostalgia? Did you see Fantasia when it was released in 1940?
Mostly the memories I made watching these movies with family and friends. Also never seen fantasia
Or anything from Ralph Bakshi. How Fritz The Cat doesn't even get honorable mention is beyond me.
Because it’s boring and not good animation.
I appreciate your input, cheers!
