Residence halls with electric heat... WTF?????

In the late 70s & early 80's electric heat was all the rage. By the late 80's people wanted nothing to do with it, and it was being ripped out.

I'm kind of amazed (and kind of not amazed) that the college didn't retrofit these buildings.

Owls nests were supposed to be torn down 10 years ago since they are so run down and falling apart so they had no intention of retrofitting them. Carle on the other hand was renovated 4-5 years ago but looks like it’s straight out of the 80s still. If you know what the backrooms are Carle looks like that inside. Carle keeps getting flooded by sprinkler systems and ruining hallways after hallways and peoples rooms. I have no idea why Carle still has electric heat.

Just curious… did they kept the waffle ceilings?

Waffle ceilings are still there and have never been better.

Some of the best times I don’t remember happened in 2C

Carle is legendary. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

I am guessing then that those dorms will be ripped down soon. KSC built a ton of new ones on the South side of campus, and enrollment has plummeted.

They are tearing down monadnock and Randall so owls nests and Carle hall are now needed. Any spare doubles that are not filled get converted into super singles and you get 2 of everything and a king size bed.

So, what is going where Monadnock and Randall are then? Or are they selling the land?

Public school, hospitals, office parks all have electric heat of some variety…. Take it easy.

Better yet, some of those heaters are installed on the ceiling!

They send these memos because they have to. A few winters back there were issues at a couple of the academic buildings on the Durham campus because mutiple faculty members left their windows open over winter break!

Too cheap to hire maintenance / security staff to go around after hours and make sure everything's ok?

Added benefit- they could have the janitor teach "Window Closing During Sub-Zero Weather 101"

I lived in the Owl's Nest in the early 90s. We were told then they were temporary housing from the 70s and 80s but were left up because they were so popular. They should have been torn down or renovated by now with all the new housing options being built on campus. I don't remember it ever being cold and I had a corner unit on the 1st floor. Probably since the rooms are so small it shouldn't get too cool.

Old timer (especially for Reddit). Bet you had the pleasure of walking across the railroad trestle when you could fall through it!

Yup, it was in my backyard! I had to walk across it after the '93 Storm of the Century to get my hungover girlfriend (now wife) saltines and ginger ale.

Jeeze who keeps their place heated above 70 degrees? I'd be sweating my ass off haha. 65 during the day, 63 at night in my home.

Dear Advanced Degree Students:

Please do not open the windows, pile junk on the heating vent, and then call to say it's cold.
